Asexuality in Young Adult Literature

Abstract:

This work deals with the depiction of asexuality in young adult literature. It handles the definition of asexuality within the LBTGQ + spectrum and society, as well as the representation of asexuality in literature in the past and today. It addresses the importance of a young reader identifying with characters of the same sexual orientation. In the practical part, the work then focuses on three contemporary novels, We Awaken by Calista Lynne, Let's Talk About Love by Claire Kann and Guardian of the Dead by Karen Healey. Since all these works include characters with an asexual orientation, the content of the practical part is an analysis of these works. Based on the theoretical part, the work addresses whether these characters are valid representations and can therefore be considered a suitable complement to the depiction of asexuality in young adult literature.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá zobrazením asexuality v literatuře pro mládež. Věnuje se definování asexuality v rámci LBTGQ+ spektra a společnosti a také reprezentací asexuality v literatuře v minulosti i dnes. Řeší důležitost identifikace mladého čtenáře s postavami se stejnou sexuální orientací. V praktické části se poté práce zaměřuje na tři konkrétní díla současné doby, We Awaken (Probudíme se) od Calisty Lynne, Let's Talk About Love (Pojďme mluvit o lásce) od Claire Kann a Guardian of the Dead (Strážce mrtvých) od Karen Healey. Jelikož všechna tato díla obsahují postavy s asexuální orientací, bude obsahem této části analýza těchto děl. Práce na základě teoretické části řeší, zda jsou tyto postavy validní reprezentací a mohou být tedy považovány za vhodné doplnění zobrazení asexuality v literatuře.
