Is-Ought Problem: Recent Responses to Hume's Question

Abstract:

Práce podává přehled dosavadních odpovědí na Humeovu otázku po logickém spojení mezi soudy o tom, co je, a o tom, co má být. Tato otázka patří mezi nejvýraznější soudobé metaetické problémy, protože představuje zásadní námitku proti morálnímu realismu. První část práce je věnována nejprve diskusi nad interpretací Humeova textu, ze kterého otázka původně vzešla, a poté moderní formulaci problému. Druhá část obsahuje shrnutí některých dosavadních odpovědí na tento problém a jejich zhodnocení. Odpovědi jsou rozděleny do pěti kategorií podle možných přístupů k řešení problému.

Abstract:

This thesis represents a summary of recent answers to Hume’s question regarding the logical connection between statements about what is and what ought to be the case. The question counts among the most important problems in modern metaethics, since it poses a significant objection against moral realism. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the debate over the interpretation of Hume’s passage, from which the question originally arouse, and to the modern formulation of the problem. The second part contains summarizations of some of the recent answers to this problem and their evaluation. The answers are sorted into five categories based on different possible approaches to the problem.
