Reenactment and Authenticity: Cultural Biography of Uniform

Abstract:

Diplomová práca vychádza z etnografického výskumu reenactmentu (rekonštrukcie bojov) so zameraním na reenactment druhej svetovej vojny. Hlavným výskumným zameraním je materiálny aspekt reenactmentu, menovite uniforma. Cieľom je poukázať na zmeny vo vnímaní autenticity prostredníctvom príkladu kultúrnej biografie uniformy. Rozhodla som sa použiť príklad uniformy, pretože sa jedná o najviac viditeľný a zároveň najvýznamnejší objekt v reenactment. Kultúrna biografia uniformy je rozprávaná lineárne prostredníctvom 4 fáz jej sociálneho života: výroba uniformy, predaj, použitie počas performance a nakoniec skladovanie a predaj uniformy. Autenticita je konštruovaná na dvoch úrovniach, ktoré sú navzájom závislé: autenticita orientovaná na objekt a interakčná autenticita. V závere je tiež vysvetlené, že autentický prežitok v reenactmente je docielený tzv. očarením technológiou, pričom je využitý koncept Alfreda Gella technológia očarenia, očarenie technológiou.

Abstract:

This thesis is based on a long term ethnographic research of the Second World War reenacting with a focus on the authenticity of material objects used in the performance of a reenactment, especially of the uniforms. The goal of the thesis is to show the changes in perception of authenticity and explore how authenticity operates within the social context of reenactors on an example of cultural biography of uniform. I decided to use uniform because it is the most visible and crucial object used in a reenactment. The cultural biography of uniform is created by narrating the trajectories of its social life in four phases: fabrication of the uniform, obtaining the uniform, use in the performance and storing/selling process. I conclude that the authenticity is constructed on two levels: object-oriented authenticity and interactional authenticity that are mutually dependent. To explain how the authentic reenactment experience is achieved the concept of the technology of enchantment and enchantment of technology is applied.
