How anatomical and ecophysiological characteristics of understory herbs of temperate oak forests are related to their responses to drought

Abstract:

Stromy modifikují podmínky prostředí pro růst keřového a bylinného patra. V dnešní době se stromové patro v lesních porostech mění nebývalou rychlostí vlivem hospodaření i vlivem vzrůstající přirozené mortality. Husté lesní porosty jsou považovány za útočiště bylin před zvýšenou teplotou v důsledku globální změny klimatu. Na druhou stranu, povrchová teplota listů v proředěných lesních porostech je sice vyšší, ale dává i možnost aktivní obrany před suchem nebo patogeny. V diplomové práci byl zjišťován především vliv stresu suchem a nedostatkem slunečního záření na anatomické parametry a jejich korelaci s fyziologií u vybraných druhů podrostních bylin rostoucích v temperátních doubravách, konkrétně u druhu Asarum europaeum L. a druhu Hepatica nobilis Schreb. Byly sledovány především změny v anatomických parametrech xylému vlivem působení stresu suchem, v druhé řadě pak vlivem nedostatku slunečního záření. Vlivem působení stresu suchem došlo u rostlin Asarum europaeum ke změnám ve velikosti plochy xylému řapíku a celkové plochy lumenu cév řapíku. Dále pak ve velikosti plochy lumenu cév, která se měnila i vlivem nedostatku slunečního záření. Stres suchem měl u druhu Asarum europaeum významný vliv na velikost listové plochy, která byla násobně větší, než u druhu Hepatica nobilis. U druhu Hepatica nobilis pak měl stres suchem vliv především na velikost průměru lumenu cév, kde stresované rostliny měly větší průměr lumenu cév, než stresované rostliny druhu Asarum europaeum. Stres suchem měl významný vliv i na počet cév u obou druhů. Vliv sucha a nedostatku slunečního záření neměl významný vliv na sledované korelace mezi anatomickými a ekofyziologickými parametry. Druh Asarum europaeum se blíží isohydrické strategii přežití. Má vyšší míru stomatální regulace, tvoří efektivnější avšak řidší xylém díky vyššímu průměru lumenu cév a větší ploše xylému řapíku. Druh Hepatica nobilis také tvoří velký průměr lumenu cév, xylém se pak ale vyznačuje nižší hydraulickou vodivostí. Tvoří tedy bezpečnější a hustší xylém, odpovídající spíše anizohydrické strategii. Bylinné patro nese značný ekologický význam pro strukturu a funkci lesních ekosystémů. Bylo by prospěšné vnímat bylinné a stromové patro jako provázanější a kompaktnější celek. Lesní hospodářství by mělo přihlížet k významu bylinného patra a zohledňovat jeho nároky z hlediska dostupnosti světla a vody. Dřeviny tak budou profitovat z příspěvku bylin z pohledu lepší dynamiky živin, schopnosti mírnit erozi půdy či ze zlepšování průtoku vody lesní půdou.

Abstract:

Trees modify the environmental conditions for the growth of the shrub and herb layer. Nowadays, the tree layer in forest stands is changing at an unprecedented speed due to the influence of management and the influence of increasing natural mortality. Dense forest stands are considered a refuge for herbs from increased temperature due to global climate change. On the other hand, the surface temperature of leaves in thinned forest stands is indeed higher, but it also gives the possibility of active defense against drought or pathogens. In the diploma thesis, the effect of drought stress and lack of sunlight on anatomical parameters and their correlation with physiology was investigated in selected species of understory herbs growing in temperate oak forests, specifically in the Asarum europaeum L. and Hepatica nobilis Schreb. As a result of drought stress, Asarum europaeum experienced changes in the size of the xylem area of the petiole and the total area of the lumen of the petiole vessels. Furthermore, in the size of the surface area of the vessel lumen, which also changed due to the lack of sunlight. Drought stress had a significant effect on the size of the leaf area in the Asarum europaeum. In the Hepatica nobilis, drought stress had an effect mainly on the diameter of the lumen of the vessels, where stressed plants had a larger diameter of the lumen of the vessels. Drought stress also had a significant effect on the number of vessels in both species. The effect of drought and lack of sunlight had no significant effect on the observed correlations between anatomical and ecophysiological parameters. The Asarum europaeum approaches an isohydric survival strategy. It has a higher degree of stomatal regulation, forms a more efficient but sparser xylem due to a higher diameter of the lumen of the vessels and a larger area of the xylem of the petiole. Hepatica nobilis also forms a large vessel lumen diameter, but the xylem is characterized by lower hydraulic conductivity. It therefore forms a safer and denser xylem, corresponding to an anisohydric strategy. The herbaceous layer carries considerable ecological importance for the structure and function of forest ecosystems. It would be beneficial to perceive the herbaceous and tree layer as a more connected and compact unit. Forest management should consider the importance of the herb layer and also its demands in terms of light and water availability. Trees will thus benefit from the contribution of herbs from the point of view of better nutrient dynamics, the ability to moderate soil erosion or from improving the flow of water through the forest floor.
