Evaluative language in journalistic discourse

Abstract:

Diplomová práca študuje jazyk žurnalizmu s cieľom overiť využívanie hodnotiacich jazykových prostriedkov v novinových článkoch nebulvárnych novín. Úvod k analytickej časti práce obsahuje popis tvorby novinových článkov, z ktorého vyplýva, že hodnotenie zo strany novín je nedeliteľnou súčasťou ich činnosti. Jadro práce je tvorené analýzou novinových článkov. Na základe aplikácie lingvistického prístupu nazvaného „appraisal“ alebo „appraisal framework“ bola zanalyzovaná vzorka 45 článkov pochádzajúcich z internetovej verzie britských novín Guardian, Independent a Telegraph (15 článkov z každých novín). Táto analýza ukázala, že aj nebulvárne noviny využívajú vo svojich článkoch hodnotiace jazykové prostriedky.

Abstract:

The thesis analyses journalistic discourse to examine the usage of evaluative language in articles of quality newspapers. In the introductory section the procedure of news production is described which shows that evaluation from the part of newspapers is inherently present from the very beginning of the process. The core of the thesis is formed by the analytical part: on the basis of the linguistic approach called “appraisal” or “appraisal framework” 45 articles coming from the online versions of three British quality newspapers, namely the Guardian, the Independent, the Telegraph, were analysed (15 articles from each newspaper). The analysis showed that quality newspapers tend to employ evaluative language in their articles.
