Tree Cavities in old fruit orchards in the Prague City

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce byl monitoring stromů a dutin v nich ve starých ovocných sadech na území Prahy. Bylo porovnáváno 5 sadů které prošli obnovou a probíhá v nich aktivní management a 5 sadů zanedbaných. U sadů byla zjištěna jejich vzdálenost od středu Prahy a hustota stromů vztažená k jednomu hektaru. Měřeny byly všechny stromy nacházející se v určené oblasti s plochou 50 m2. U všech měřených dřevin byl zaznamenán jejich druh a příslušnost do jedné z kategorií: ovocné dřeviny, neovocné dřeviny, nepůvodní dřeviny. Dále pak DBH, zdraví stromu, stáří, celistvost koruny, zápoj keřového patra a byla odhadnuta jeho výška. Nakonec byly zaznamenány všechny nedokončené i dokončené stromové dutiny. U dokončených byla změřena jejich výška, průměr vletového otvoru, typ dutiny a její orientace ke světovým stranám. Samotný monitoring probíhal od listopadu 2021 do ledna 2022. Na všech sledovaných územích bylo zjištěno 11 rodů dřevin v celkovém počtu 827 stromů Skladba stromů ve všech sadech byla poměrně vyrovnaná. Ovocné dřeviny celkově představovaly 48 % všech stromů. V obnovených sadech měly ovocné stromy zastoupení 76 % a v zanedbaných sadech 31 %. Nejzastoupenější dřevinou byla třešeň (Prunus sp.) s celkovým zastoupením 29 %. Celkově bylo zjištěno 137 dokončených dutin. Jejich distribuce mezi obnovené (53 %) a zanedbané (47 %) sady byla opět vyrovnaná. Poměr mezi vyhloubenými (42 %) a vyhnilými (58 %) dutinami byl nakloněn ve prospěch vyhnilých. Většina dutin (98 %) se nacházela v ovocných dřevinách. Analýza vlivů charakteristik stromů na početnost dutin v ovocných dutinách ukázala, že početnost dutin nejvíce ovlivňovalo DBH (průměr kmene stromu v prsní výšce), celistvost stromové koruny a počet nedokončených dutin. Se zvyšujícím se DBH stoupá početnost dutin. Poškozená stromová koruna a výskyt nedokončených dutin má pozitivní vliv na početnost dutin. Tyto proměnné jako signifikantní uvádí několik studií zabývající se podobnou tématikou. Další signifikantní faktory pak byly hustota porostu, management, zdraví a výška stromu.

Abstract:

The main goal of this thesis was monitoring of trees and cavities within them in old fruit orchards located in city of Prague. Five restored orchards with active management and five non restored orchareds were compared. The distance to the center of Prague was measured for every orchard as well as density of trees calculated for area of one acre. Every tree in area of 50 m2 was measured. Species and categorization into these three classes: fruit trees, non-fruit trees and non-native trees was recorded. Futhermore DBH, vitality, age, cohesivnes of tree canopy, occurence of shrub layer and estimated height was mesured for every tree. Last but not least quantity of unfinished and finished tree cavities was counted. For every finished cavity, height and diameter of cavity entrance, type of cavity and orientation was measured. The monitoring was done between november 2021 and January 2022. In all studied areas 11 genuses of 820 trees were found. Species composition was balanced in both types of orchards. Fruit trees represented 48 % of trees in total. In restored orchards the representation of fruit trees was a higher (76 %) and much higher then in non-restored orchards (31 %). The most numerous was cherry tree (prunus sp.) which represented 29 % of all trees. In total 137 finished tree cavities were found. Distribution of cavities between two types of orchards was again balanced (restored 53 %, non restored 47 %). Nonexcavated cavities were more numerous (58 %). Most of the cavities (98 %) were located in fruit trees. Analysis of impact of characteristics of fruit trees showed, that quantity of cavities was most affected by DBH, cohesivnes of tree canopy and quantity of unfinished cavities. The ocurence of cavities was rising with DBH (diameter of tree trunk in breast height ). Damaged tree canopy and ocurence of unfinished tree cavities have positive impact on quantity of finished tree cavities. These characteristics of trees was also significant in several studies on a similar topic. Another, but less significant characteristics were density of trees, management of orchards, vitality and height of tree.
