The heroine´s quest for selfhood in Alice Munro`s Lives of girls and women

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the principal motives and themes of the literary genre of modern Canadian Female Bildungsroman. Its major aim is to delineate their substance and to analyse Alice Munro´s treatment of them in her novel Lives of Girls and Women (1971). The analysis focuses on the central motif of the heroine´s search of self-identity. Firstly, the historical context of patriarchal gender ideology and the Woman´s Movement in terms of their influence on the post 1970´s Canadian Female Bildungsroman are examined along with the Canadian literary concepts which are most significant and relevant for the aim of this thesis. Secondly, the key motifs of the post 1970´s Female Bildungsroman, including the innovative ones, are described and subsequently analysed in the novel. The findings are summarized in the conclusion of the thesis.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá stěžejními motivy a tématy literárního žánru moderního kanadského ženského Bildungsromanu. Hlavním cílem této práce je vymezit hlavní podstatu těchto motivů a analyzovat, jak s nimi kanadská spisovatelka Alice Munro pracuje ve svém románu Životy dívek a žen (1971). Analýza se zaměřuje na ústřední motiv hrdinčina hledání vlastní identity. Nejprve je nastíněn historický kontext patriarchální genderové ideologie a feministického hnutí spolu s jejich zásadním vlivem na vznik a podobu moderního kanadského ženského Bildungsromanu. Poté jsou popsány klíčové inovativní motivy tohoto literárního žánru a následně jsou analyzovány ve zmíněném románu. Závěr práce přehledně shrnuje daná zjištění.
