Support of urban biking - comparison of the situation in Brno and Štýrský Hradec

Abstract:

Předložená bakalářská práce se zabývá městskou cyklistikou a její podporou. Představuje cyklistickou dopravu jako environmentálně příznivý způsob dopravy pro město a pomocí zahraničních zkušeností popisuje základní postupy její podpory. Stručně ukazuje zakotvení podpory cyklistické dopravy na úrovni České republiky a konkrétně mapuje cyklistickou dopravu v Brně. Zde poukazuje na současný stav a největší bariéry jejího rozvoje a zkoumá její podporu pomocí analýzy dokumentů, politické situace a působení občanských iniciativ. Zjištění pak kriticky srovnává s rakouským městem Štýrský Hradec, kde je již cyklistika běžnou součástí dopravního systému. Z tohoto srovnání vychází, že Štýrský Hradec má 5-6 krát rozvinutější cyklistickou infrastrukturu a úměrně tomu 5-6 krát více lidí využívá kolo jako dopravní prostředek. Autorka dochází k závěru, že v posledních dvou desetiletích byla podpora městské cyklistiky jako způsobu dopravy (ne rekreace) v Brně spíše pouhou součástí strategií a dokumentů. Současné dění ukazuje na možnou změnu tohoto trendu a zavedení některých opatření do praxe.

Abstract:

This BA thesis focuses on city biking and its support. The thesis presents biking as an environmentally friendly means of transport in a city and drawing on foreign experiences it describes basic practices of biking support. It briefly describes how city-biking is incorporated on the level of Czech republic and more precisely- it maps city-biking in Brno. It adverts to its present state and the barriers of its development and investigates its support by analyzing documents, political situation and involvement of public initiatives. The findings are then critically compared to the situation in Graz where biking is a common part of the transport system. The result of this comparison is that the biking infrastructure in Graz is 5-6 times more developed and consequently 5-6 times more people use bike as a means of transport. The author concludes that in the last two decades the support of biking as a means of transport ( not recreational biking) in Brno has been only a part of strategies and documents. The present course of events points to a possible change of this trend and promises that some measurements be put into practice.
