Study of interactions in crystalline solids by using Hirshfeld surface analysis

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci se věnujeme Hirshfeldově povrchové analýze, což je moderní krystalografická metoda využívaná ke studiu molekulových krystalů a jejich mezimolekulových interakcí. Tento výpočetně-chemický nástroj umožňuje především snadné srovnávání krystalových struktur, rozlišení jednotlivých typů interakcí (např. O…H, C…H nebo C…C) a jejich kvantifikaci. V teoretické části je systematicky shrnuta problematika Hirshfeldova mapování, včetně zavedení Hirshfeldova povrchu a otiskového diagramu a popisu jejich vlastností. Dále jsou přiblíženy veličiny vhodné k mapování na Hirshfeldův povrch (např. kontaktní vzdálenosti, ukazatel tvaru nebo elektrostatický potenciál) a uvádíme rovněž konkrétní příklady využití Hirshfeldovy analýzy, mj. při studiu polymorfních struktur a supramolekulárních systémů. Hirshfeldovu metodu jsme rovněž využili k analýze rozsáhlého souboru ligandů se strukturním motivem R2P(E) (R = organický substituent, E = chalkogen), které mohou být rozděleny do čtyř základních skupin: ligandy typu PCP, PCC, PNC a PNP. V experimentální části je popsán praktický postup při aplikaci Hirshfeldovy analýzy a v závěrečné kapitole jsou podrobně srovnávány a diskutovány jednotlivé krystalové struktury a jejich skupiny.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with Hirshfeld surface analysis, a modern crystallographic method suitable for studies of molecular crystals and their intermolecular interactions. This computational-chemistry tool allows for rapid comparison of molecular structures, identifying different types of interactions (e.g. O…H, C…H or C…C) and their quantification. The introductory part of the thesis systematically summarizes the issues of Hirshfeld analysis, introducing Hirshfeld surfaces and fingerprint plots and their characteristics. Various properties which can be mapped over the surface (such as contact distances, shape index and electrostatic potential) are described, along with several examples of applications, including studies of polymorphs and supramolecular systems. In our case, Hirshfeld analysis was applied to a large set of ligands with R2P(E) structural motif (R = organic substituent, E = chalcogen), which can be divided into four main groups: PCP, PCC, PNC and PNP ligands. The experimental part describes the procedure when utilizing Hirshfeld analysis. The final chapter offers a detailed comparison and discussion of individual crystal structures and their groups.
