The Position of Christian Minorities in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá postavením křesťanských minorit v Indonésii, Malajsii a Bruneji. Jejím cílem je posoudit do jaké míry může teorie o významu demokratičnosti pomoci vysvětlit rozdíly v postavení křesťanských menšin ve sledovaných zemích. První část se věnuje teoretickým modelům vlivu demokracie na postavení menšin. Ve druhé části je představena metodologie práce, poté indikátory obou proměnných a také charakteristika informačních zdrojů. Další kapitola se věnuje stručné historii pronikání křesťanství do regionu. V hlavních kapitolách je nejprve analyzována úroveň demokracie a poté i samotné postavení křesťanských minorit v socioekonomické, politické a právní rovině. Hodnoceny jsou rovněž islamizační tlaky, státem řízené migrační programy, dodržování lidských práv a vztah křesťanských menšin s dominantní muslimskou populací v Indonésii, Malajsii a Bruneji. Závěr práce se věnuje celkovému zhodnocení a srovnání sledovaných zemí a posouzení vlivu demokracie na postavení křesťanských minorit.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the position of Christian minorities in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. Its aim is to assess the extent to which theories on the importance of democracy can help explain the differences in the status of Christian minorities in the countries surveyed. The first part deals with the theoretical models of the influence of democracy on the status of minorities. The second part presents the methodology of the thesis, then the indicators of both variables as well as the characteristics of the information sources. The next chapter deals with a brief history of the penetration of Christianity into the region. The main chapters first analyse the level of democracy, and then the very position of Christian minorities in socio-economic, political and legal dimensions. Islamization, state-run migration programs, human rights and the relationship of Christian minorities with the dominant Muslim population in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei are also assessed. The conclusion of the thesis is devoted to the overall assessment and comparison of the monitored countries and the assessment of the influence of democracy on the position of Christian minorities.
