The concept of psychologization of literary characters on the verge of insanity (on the materials of the selected works from Russian and English literature)

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na vymezení konceptu psychologizace literárních postav na pomezí šílenství a rozumu, konkrétně na materiálu ruské literatury a literatur anglického jazyka. V samotném literárním světě se nesetkáme s příliš velkým zastoupením prací, jež by fenomén šílenství v literárním díle reflektovaly. Tento text se tedy blíže věnuje interpretaci kategorie šílenství, a to s ohledem jak na jeho dějinné pojetí, typologii a motivy, tak také na jeho vhodné žánrové použití. Studie se rovněž zaměřuje na analýzu a komparativní posouzení jevu šílenství ve vybraných reprezentativních dílech z okruhu tří národních literatur. Toto zkoumání je postaveno na probádání vhodných odborných knih od několika autorů, kteří se danou problematikou zabývají. Jejich komentáře poskytují různá stanoviska k specifickým způsobům vyjádření fenoménu šílenství a jsou nosným bodem analytické části práce. Materiál je doplněn o vlastní zkušenost spojenou s četbou primární literatury a vzájemným srovnáváním zvolených textů. Studie dotváří zasazení do kontextu společných rysů a analyzovaných děl a ukazuje vývoj s přesahy do okruhu tří stanovených literatur.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on defining the concept of psychologization of literary figures on the verge of insanity and sense, narrowing its interest on materials from Russian and English literature. In the literary world itself, there is not an exceeding number of works to be found which would reflect the phenomenon of insanity in a literary work. The thesis thus deals closer with the interpretation of the category of insanity, considering its historical concept, typology and motives, as well as its genre application. The study also pursues an analysis and comparative recognition of the phenomenon of insanity in selected representative works from the circle of three national literatures. This research is based on the examination of adequate scholarly publications from several authors who deal with similar topic. Their commentaries provide various standpoints on specific methods for expressing the phenomenon of insanity and they create the pillars for the analytical part of the thesis. The material is supplemented by data collected from personal experience gained from reading the primary literature and reciprocally comparing the selected texts. The study puts into context mutual features of the analysed works and portrays the development reaching into the areas of the established literatures.
