Changes in Traditional Devotion in the Reformation England on the Example of the Exeter Diocese

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá obdobím reformace v Anglii. Zahrnuje období let 1520 – 1570, tedy léta vlády Jindřicha VIII., Edvarda VI., Marie Tudorovny a Alžběty I. Práce odpovídá na otázku, jak reagovali obyvatelé diecéze Exeter zahrnující kraje Devon a Cornwall na reformační změny ve vztahu k tradiční katolické zbožnosti. Zaměřuje se na náboženské praktiky, které zde pracovně dělí na praktiky povinné a nepovinné. Praktiky povinné jsou mše, eucharistie, křest, ušní zpověď a půst. Do nepovinných se zde počítá kult svatých, s tím související poutě, svátky a procesí, přímluvné mše, modlitby a prosby a úcta ke svatým pramenům a relikviím. Každá kapitola se dělí podle zkoumaného typu pramenů a podle kategorie praktik. Prameny jsou rozděleny na verbální, tedy písemně zaznamenaná vyjádření, soudní procesy nebo například požadavky povstalců při vzpouře, na prameny finančního charakteru, tedy účty, odkazy v testamentech a další, a na prameny behaviorální, zachycující chování obyvatel. Výsledky svědčí o tom, že nejoblíbenější a nejdéle přetrvávající praktikou byly kromě úcty k pramenům, která v lehce pozměněné podobě vydržela mnohdy až do dnešních dnů, úcta ke svatým a přímluvy, o kterých máme zprávy i 25 let po jejich legislativním zákazu a potlačování. Závěr obsahuje zamyšlení nad důvody delšího přetrvávání nepovinných praktik a může sloužit jako námět ke zpracování dalšího výzkumu.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the period of the Reformation in England. It covers the period 1520 - 1570, a reign of Henry VIII., Edward VI., Mary Tudor and Elizabeth I. The work answers the question of how people in the Diocese of Exeter covering Devonshire and Cornwall responded to reform changes related to the traditional Catholic piety. It focuses on religious practices, which are divided into practices of compulsory and optional. Compulsory practices are Mass, the Eucharist, baptism, confession and fasting. Optional practices are the cult of saints, related pilgrimages, festivals and processions, intercessory Masses, prayers and supplications to the saints and the veneration of relics and springs. Each chapter is divided according to the type of examined sources and practices. Sources are divided into verbal, which are recorded in written statements, lawsuits or demands rebels in revolt, the sources of financial nature, which are accounts, references and testaments, and behavioral sources, capturing behavior. Results currently indicate that the most popular and longest lasting, in addition to the practice of respect to the springs, which in slightly modified form often lasted until the present day, were veneration to the saints and intercessions, which have been reported 25 years after their legislative prohibition and repression. The conclusion includes a reflection on the reasons for a longer persistence of voluntary practices and can serve as a research topic for processing.
