Economic Analysis of rice production in North-Central Nigeria - A case study of Kogi State

Abstract:

Rice is one of the major staple foods widely consumed in Nigeria and other parts of the world. In addition to being among the largest consumers of rice globally, Nigeria has been listed as both exporter and importer of rice grains. The fact that a nation is listed as an importer of rice does not imply that it does not produce or export rice; rather it means that the majority of its domestically produced grains are inferior to those of international brands. As a result, the public preferred imported rice over varieties made locally. Although recent advancements in rice production methods, varieties, and government initiatives have increased consumer acceptance of locally produced rice, economic factors have been cited as one of the main threats to the nation's rice production. It is in this context that this thesis is aimed at analysing the economics of rice production in Kogi State, which is one of the States with high records of rice production in central Nigeria.
