Analysis of GameStop shares short squeeze

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je přiblížit problematiku short squeeze akcií společnosti GameStop a následně provést detailní analýzu příčin, průběhu a důsledků tohoto jevu. První část práce je zaměřena na teoretický rámec a uchopení jednotlivých pojmů, úzce spojených s touto problematikou. Práce se dále věnuje příčinám a průběhu události, přičemž značný důraz je kladen na motivace jednotlivých subjektů a další aspekty ovlivňující cenu analyzovaných akcií. Mezi tyto aspekty byly zařazeny psychologické faktory, jako je vliv sociálních sítí, popularizace události v médiích či gamifikace investování, a vliv pandemické krize, popřípadě celkového ekonomického stavu světa, na finanční trhy. V rámci práce byla rovněž, pro poskytnutí hlubšího vzhledu do události, počítána vnitřní hodnota akcií společnosti, jejíž zjištěná hodnota je markantně nižší než tržní cena akcií. V poslední části práce je pomocí regresní analýzy analyzován vliv sociální platformy Reddit na celkovou změnu ceny těchto akcií, který se jeví jako statisticky významný. Součástí analýzy je také dopad tohoto jevu nejen na finanční trhy jako celek, ale také na jednotlivé subjekty tohoto trhu

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to present the issue of short squeeze of GameStop shares and then to make a detailed analysis of the causes, course, and consequences this phenomenon. The first part of the thesis focuses on the theoretical framework and grasping of individual concepts that are closely related to this issue. The thesis then examines the causes and course of the event, with considerable emphasis on the motivations of individual subjects and other aspects affecting the price of the analyzed shares. These aspects include psychological factors such as the influence of social networks, the popularization of the event in the media or the gamification of investing, and the impact of the pandemic crisis or the general economic state of the world on the financial markets. Also, to provide a deeper insight into the event, the fair value of the company's shares was calculated within the scope of the work, which was found to be significantly lower than the market price of the shares. In the last part, the effect of the social platform Reddit on the overall change in the price of these stocks is analyzed, using regression analysis, and appears to be statistically significant. The analysis also includes the impact of this phenomenon not only on the financial markets as a whole, but also on the individual subjects of this market.
