The Nature of the Relationship between Queen Victoria and William Gladstone

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to examine the nature of the relationship between Queen Victoria and Prime Minister William Gladstone. The work focuses on Queen Victoria's changing attitudes to the political measures introduced by William Gladstone and their collaboration. To conduct the research the published personal letters and diaries of Queen Victoria and William Gladstone were analysed, as well as specialised literature in the field of cultural history in the context of 19th-century Britain. It was revealed that the Queen's attitude had two major phases, during which she aligned with the Conservative Party and strengthened her role as a monarch, which led to a tense relationship with Gladstone. These findings shed light on their personalities and political circumstances in which they functioned, which is essential for understanding the domestic and foreign policies of Victorian Britain.

Abstract:

Cílem práce je prozkoumat povahu vztahu mezi královnou Viktorií a premiérem Williamem Gladstonem. Práce se zaměřuje na měnící se postoje královny Viktorie k politickým opatřením zavedeným Williamem Gladstonem a na jejich spolupráci. V rámci výzkumu byly analyzovány publikované osobní dopisy a deníky královny Viktorie a Williama Gladstona, stejně jako odborná literatura v oblasti kulturních dějin v kontextu Británie 19. století. Ukázalo se, že postoj královny měl dvě hlavní fáze, během nichž spojila se s konzervativní stranou a posílila svoji roli monarchy, což vedlo k napjatému vztahu s Gladstonem. Tato zjištění osvětlují jejich osobnosti a politické okolnosti ve kterých se pohybovali, což je zásadní pro pochopení domácí a zahraniční politiky viktoriánské Británie.
