Slow-scan Television as a Tactical Medium

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje technologii pomaloběžné televize (slow-scan television, SSTV) v kontextu taktických médií. SSTV byla nejvíce užívána v 60. a 70. letech 20. století, v současnosti je již nahrazena pokročilejšími médii. Stále však může sloužit v rámci subverzních uměleckých strategií, které polemizují s dominantním trendem velkých korporací a snaží se o nezávislost a narušení monopolizace mediálního prostoru. Pozornost bude věnována SSTV také z estetického hlediska, přičemž bude poukázáno na analogie s low-tech estetikou raného video artu a net artu. Cílem práce je nahlédnout na SSTV, jako na taktické médium ve smyslu kritického užití a snahy o vymezení se vůči komunikačním praktikám středního proudu. Součástí práce je také praktický experiment autora, jenž bude reflektovat konceptuální rámec teoretické části kvalifikační práce.

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on the technology slow-TV (slow-scan television, SSTV) in the context of tactical media. SSTV was most used in the 1960s and 1970s, and is now being replaced by more advanced media. However, it can still serve within subversive artistic strategies that argue with the dominant trend of large corporations and seek independence and disrupt the monopolization of media space. Attention will also be paid to SSTV from an aesthetic point of view, while analogies with the low-tech aesthetics of early video art and net art will be pointed out. The aim of the thesis is to look at SSTV as a tactical medium in the sense of critical use and efforts to define oneself in relation to mainstream communication practices. Part of the work is also a practical experiment of the author, which will reflect the conceptual framework of the theoretical part of the qualification work.
