Representation of Spanish Speaking Groups in American Newspapers: A Case Study of New York Times and New York Post

Anotace:

Práce zkoumá reprezentaci španělsky mluvících skupin v americkém mainstreamovém tisku. Hlavními cíli této práce je zjistit, zda jsou španělsky mluvící skupiny reprezentovány negativně, dále identifikovat jazykové strategie užívané médii při vyjadřování ideologií a postojů a nakonec porovnat rozsah využití těchto strategií v seriózním a v populárním tisku. Analyzovaná data pocházejí ze dvou newyorských deníků, New York Times a New York Post. První je zástupcem seriózního tisku a druhý tisku populárního, neboli tabloidového žánru. Na základě metody vertikálního vyhledávání klíčových slov byl z těchto dvou médií vybrán vzorek článků vztahujících se tematicky ke španělsky mluvícím skupinám v USA. Jako hledaná klíčová slova byly stanoveny tyto výrazy: Hispanic, Latino, Mexican, Spanish a Chicano. Rozsah článků je limitován na leden a únor roku 2016. Základní metodologií pro tuto práci je kritická analýza diskursu, konkrétně pak metoda od ní odvozená, a to analýza sociálních činitelů. Práce se také opírá o studii jazykových strategií využívaných v tisku, jmenovitě strategie nominace, predikace a na ně navazující strategie argumentační a rétorické. Datový výstup byl dále kategorizován na základě kolektivizace a diferenciace hispánské minority jako celku. Španělsky mluvící skupiny se ukázaly být reprezentovány převážně negativně. Nejčastěji publikovaná témata spojená s touto minoritou byla orientovaná na politiku, zločinnost, stereotypní prezentaci Hispánců, rasismus a drogy. Práce poukazuje na předpojatost tisku a na jeho schopnost za užití konkrétních jazykových strategií formovat postoje a názory čtenáře, jakož i ovlivňovat preferované čtení daného textu. Ukázalo se, že dané jazykové strategie byly využívány jak ve vzorku pocházejícím ze seriózního deníku, tak z tabloidu, přičemž druhý měl větší tendenci k senzacechtivosti.

Abstract:

The thesis studies the representation of the Spanish speaking groups in mainstream American printed media. The main objectives of the research are to find out whether the Spanish speaking groups are represented negatively in the printed media, to identify discursive strategies used by newspapers when expressing their ideologies and attitudes, and finally to explore the extent of employment of these strategies by broadsheets and by popular press. The analysed data originate from two New York daily newspapers, the New York Times and the New York Post. The first is a representative of quality press and the second one is a representative of popular press, or tabloid. On the grounds of the vertical keyword search method, the sample of articles related to the Spanish speaking groups in the USA was selected from the two media. The following terms were established as the searched for keywords: Hispanic, Latino, Mexican, Spanish, and Chicano. The extent of the articles is limited to January and February of the year 2016. The principal methodology of this paper is constituted by the critical discourse analysis and by the approach derived from this method, the analysis of social actors. The thesis also relies on the study of discursive strategies used by printed media, namely the nomination and predication strategies and the argumentative and rhetorical uses of language. The data outcome is categorised on the basis of collectivisation and differentiation of the Hispanic community as a whole. The Spanish speaking groups showed to be represented overwhelmingly negatively. The most frequently published topics related to this minority were oriented to politics, crime, stereotypical presentation of Hispanics, racism and drugs. The thesis adverts to the bias of printed media and to their ability, when using particular discursive strategies, to form the readers’ attitudes and opinions, as well as to influence the preferred reading of the text. The employment of the discourse strategies was detected both in the broadsheet and the popular press sample, where the latter tended to employ more sensationalism.
