The Influence of the Exchange Rate on Economic Growth in Selected EU Member States

Abstract:

V práci se zkoumá dopad pohybů reálného směnného kurzu na ekonomický růst na základě průměrných dat pro panel sedmi vybraných členských států Evropské Unie (Bulharska, Česka, Dánska, Maďarska, Polska, Rumunska, Švédska) v období mezi lety 1995 - 2021 za použití metody "difference" Generalized Method of Moments. Hlavní nezávislou proměnnou je bilaterální cenový index reálného směnného kurzu. Dalšími nezávislými kontrolními proměnnými byli: inflace, otevřenost ekonomiky, hrubé úspory, tvorba hrubého fixního kapitálu a vládní výdaje na konečnou spotřebu. Po odhadu růstových efektů pro základní rovnici (3.1) je v práci použita míra reálného efektivního směnného kurzu k testování robustnosti výsledků a další dva nástroje pro reálný směnný kurz - Chinn-Ito (2020) a oficiální směnný kurz jednotky místní měny. Z výsledků se dá určit, že tato práce s tímto konkrétním datasetem poskytuje důkazy pozitivních růstových efektů zhodnocování reálného směnného kurzu. Po použití alternativních měření směnného kurzu a při použití jiné identifikační strategie je dopad robustní.

Abstract:

The paper examines the impact of real exchange rate movements on economic growth based on average data for a panel of seven selected member states of the European Union (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Sweden) in the period between 1995 and 2021 using the " difference" Generalized Method of Moments. The main independent variable is the bilateral price index of the real exchange rate. Other independent control variables were: inflation, trade openess, gross savings, gross fixed capital formation and government final consumption expenditure. After estimating the growth effects for the basic equation (3.1), the paper uses the measure of the real effective exchange rate to test the robustness of the results and two other instruments for the real exchange rate - Chinn-Ito (2020) and the official exchange rate of the local currency unit. From the results, it can be determined that this work with this particular dataset provides evidence of positive growth effects of real exchange rate appreciation. The impact is robust after using alternative measures of the exchange rate and using a different identification strategy.
