Who's afraid of children: Methodological specifics of research with children in social sciences

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce je poskytnout základní informace potřebné pro počáteční orientaci ve výzkumu dětí v sociálních vědách, se zvláštním zaměřením na metodologická specifika. Práce nabízí stručný přehled základních teoretických přístupů ke konceptům dítě a dětství, metodologických postupů včetně popisu různých výzkumných technik a etických zásad a v neposlední řadě příklady konkrétních výzkumů s dětmi ilustrujících metody vyvinuté nebo upravené pro výzkumy dětí. Práce je rozdělena do tří částí. První se věnuje teoretickému vymezení konceptů dítě a dětství a jejich proměnám v čase. Nabízí pohled na historický vývoj těchto konceptů a zasazuje je do sociologické teorie. Druhá část se zabývá metodologií a metodologickými specifiky výzkumné práce s dětmi. Popisuje základní výzkumné techniky s důrazem na odlišnosti způsobené přítomností dětí. Dále se věnuje etickým otázkám výzkumů dětí a v závěru nabízí doplňující informace ke konceptům moc, rozdíly a zkreslení. Ve třetí části jsou uvedeny příklady speciálních metod a metodologických postupů speciálně vyvinutých pro výzkumy s dětmi. Pozornost je konkrétně věnována vizuálním metodám se zaměřením na kresbu, focus group v propojení s vyprávěním příběhu, použití loutek při rozhovorech s dětmi, dotazníkovým otázkám pro zjišťování postojů menších dětí a možnosti zapojit děti do výzkumu v roli aktivních výzkumníků.

Abstract:

The main goal of this bachelor thesis is to provide the basic information necessary for the initial orientation in the research of children in the social sciences, with a special focus on methodological specifics. The work offers a brief overview of basic theoretical approaches to concepts of child and childhood, methodological procedures including a description of various research techniques and ethical principles and, last but not least, examples of specific researches with children illustrating methods developed or adapted for children's research. The work is divided into three parts. The first one deals with the theoretical definition of child and childhood concepts and their changes over time. It offers an insight into the historical development of these concepts and puts them into sociological theory. The second part deals with methodology and methodological specifics of research work with children. It describes basic research techniques with an emphasis on differences caused by the presence of children. It also focuses on the ethical issues of child research and at the end offers additional information about concepts of power, differences and distortions. In the third part there are examples of special methods and methodological approaches specifically developed for research with children. Particular attention is paid to visual methods focusing on drawing, focus group in conjunction with storytelling, use of puppets in interviews with children, questionnaire questions for finding younger children's attitudes, and the possibility of engaging children in research as active researchers.
