Vegetable names in Czech. Etymological-historical analysis

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vybranými českými názvy nejběžnějších a nejrozšířenějších druhů zeleniny u nás i ve světě. V úvodu práce je nastíněna historie pěstování zeleniny ve světě i v českých zemích. Následuje charakteristika a historický původ vybrané zeleniny. V jazykové části práce popisuje jazykový vývoj jednotlivých názvů od staré češtiny po současnost, objasňuje etymologický výklad slov a uvádí nářeční a lidové varianty jednotlivých názvů. Práce je doplněna o využití vybraných druhů zeleniny v kuchyni a zpestřena přiloženými dobovými kuchařskými recepty.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the selected Czech names of the most common and most widespread vegetables in the Czech Republic and all over the world. At the beginning of the thesis there is mentioned history of vegetable cultivation in the world as well as in the Czech Republic. The thesis discribes characteristics and historical origin of the selected species of vegetable. In the language part of the thesis there is a description of the language development of the selected names of vegetables from an old Czech language to the contemporary one, etymological explanation of the words and their vernacular and folk variants. In the end of the single chapters of the thesis there is a characteristics of vegetable uses as dishes and old Czech recipes.
