Aesthetics and Witticism in the Work of Laurence Sterne

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Zdroje a druhy komična v díle Laurence Sterna se zaměřuje na hledání estetických aspektů komična a způsobu jejich komické funkce v románech Laurence Sterna. První část práce obsahuje teoretický aparát. Na základě děl Aristotela a Kanta je definován pojem komična a jeho aspekty, následovány důležitým pojmem hry. Následně je představen Bachtinův pojem „dole“. Ve druhé části je pro lepší orientaci analyzována struktura románu Život a názory blahorodého pána Tristrama Shandyho. Hlavní část práce se zabývá popisem a analýzou komických aspektů románu za použití teoretického aparátu. Cílem práce je poukázání na komické aspekty ve Sternově díle, jejich analýza, povaha a způsob dosažení komické funkce. Práce rovněž obsahuje redefinici pojmu travestie. Velký důraz je kladen na čtení a analyzování textů primární literatury.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis Zdroje a druhy komična v díle Laurence Sterna is aiming at searching aesthetic aspects of comicality and mode of their comical function in the novels by Laurence Sterne. First part of the thesis contains theoretical apparatus. The term comedy is classified on the basis of the works by Aristotle and Kant as well as the aspects of comedy, which are followed by the important term game. After that the Bakhtin’s term „lower stratum“ is presented. For better orientation in the novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman its structure is analyzed in the second part. The body of the work contains description and analyses of comical aspects of the novel by using the theoretical apparatus. The main subject of the thesis is to refer the comical aspect of Sterne’s work and analyze their nature as well as the way they fulfill the comical function. The thesis also contains the redefying of the term “travesty”. The main emphasis is turned to reading and analyzing of primary literature.
