Conspicuous fashion: luxury in sociological theory of consumption

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the significance and transformations of luxury on the ground of the character of society which leads to the consumption of luxury fashionable goods. Consumption of luxury is depicted as an important meaning representation in two levels, firstly reproducing the class stratification, secondly as a field of free choice. The main theoretical frame consists of theory of leisure class and conspicuous consumption by Thorstein Veblen in comparison with ideas about democratization of luxury and individualistic dynamics of the postmodern society by Gilles Lipovetsky. Using the theories of both authors is discussed the question about luxury from consuming society perspective. The problem of transformation of luxury is integrated in brief chronological explanation of individual forms of luxury. Selected concepts illustrate evolution of thinking about luxury from the class society till the postmodern meanwhile the attention is focused on consuming motivations of individual. Fashion and its important quality of fast change and innovation are highlighted as significant factor. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the movement of the significance of luxury in consuming society, from the previous essential mark of prestige and social status to aesthetization of luxury and consumption motivations of emotional consumer.

Abstract:

Práca pojednáva o význame a premenách luxusu v závislosti na prerode charakteru spoločnosti, vedúceho k spotrebe luxusného módneho tovaru. Spotreba luxusu je zachytená ako dôležitý komunikátor významu v dvoch rovinách, na jednej strane kopírujúc triedne rozvrstvenie, na druhej strane ako pole slobodného výberu. Základný teoretický rámec tvorí teória záhaľčivej triedy a okázalej spotreby Thorsteina Veblena v konfrontácii s myšlienkami Gillesa Lipovetskeho o demokratizácii luxusu na báze individualistickej dynamiky postmodernej spoločnosti. Pomocou teórií oboch autorov je riešená otázka luxusu z pohľadu spotrebnej spoločnosti. Problém premeny luxusu je zasadený do stručného chronologického výkladu jeho jednotlivých foriem. Zvolené koncepty ilustrujú vývoj myslenia o prepychu od triednej spoločnosti k postmodernej, pričom je pozornosť sústredená na spotrebné motivácie jedincov. Ako dôležitý faktor, ktorý pôsobí na luxus, je menovaná móda a jej významná vlastnosť rýchlej zmeny a inovácie. Hlavným cieľom práce je demonštrovať posun významu luxusu v konzumnej spoločnosti od nevyhnutného znaku prestíže a spoločenského postavenia k estetizácii prepychu a podnetom spotreby emocionálneho konzumenta.
