Attachment in Close Relationships and Alexithymia in Late Adolescence: Relation to Fear

Abstract:

This study is focused on attachment and alexithymia in context of emotion experience, specifically experiencing fear. The main purpose was to find out how attachment in close relationships and alexithymia contribute to overall amount of fear in late adolescence. We dealt with general rate of avoidance and anxiety in close relationships, but also with attachment styles in relation to specific individuals which are considered to be important attachment figures in late adolescence. We used questionnaire methods for collecting the data: ECR-RS (Experiences in Close Relationships -Relationships Structures Questionnaire) to assess attachment with mother, father, best friend and romantic partner; TAS-20 (Toronto Alexithymia Scale 20 Item) for measuring alexithymia, and FSSC-II (Fear Survey Schedule for Children, second revision) to assess overall amount of fear. We gathered data from 205 adolescents in the age rating between 17 and 19 years. By using multiple linear regression we found out that sex, difficulty identifying feelings, anxiety in relationship with best friend and avoidance in relationship with mother significantly predicted the overall amount of fear. We also found many correlations between studied concepts which are discusses in context of previous findings and theory.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zameriava na citovú väzbu a alexithýmiu v kontexte emočného prežívania, konkrétne pociťovaním strachu. Hlavným cieľom bolo zistiť, ako sa citová väzba v blízkych vzťahoch a alexithýmia podieľajú na celkovej miere strachu v období neskorej adolescencie. Zaoberali sme sa obecnou mierou vyhýbavosti a úzkostnosti vo vzťahu k blízkym osobám, ale taktiež podobou väzby ku konkrétnym osobám, ktoré sú v období neskorej adolescencie považované za dôležité väzbové figúry. K získaniu dát boli použité dotazníkové metódy: pre určenie citovej väzby ECR-RS (Experiences in Close Relationships – Relationships Structures Questionnaire), ktorý meria citovú väzbu k matke, otcovi, najlepšiemu kamarátovi a romantickému partnerovi; pre zachytenie alexithýmie TAS-20 (Toronto Alexithymia Scale 20 Item); a pre zistenie obecnej miery strachu FSSC-II (Fear Survey Schedule for Children, druhá revidovaná verzia). Analyzovali sme dáta od 199 adolescentov vo veku 17-19 rokov. Použitím mnohonásobnej lineárnej regresie sme zistili, že pohlavie, ťažkosť identifikovať emócie, úzkosť vo vzťahu ku kamarátovi a vyhýbanie sa vo vzťahu k matke signifikantne predpovedajú celkovú mieru strachu. Taktiež sme našli viaceré korelácia medzi skúmanými oblasťami, ktorú sú diskutované v kontexte predchádzajúcich zistení a teórie.
