The issue of Anthropocene literature through the perspective of Timothy Morton's ecological thought.

Abstract:

Cílem předložené diplomové práce je prozkoumání způsobů literární reflexe antropocénu a možností literatury podnítit čtenářovu ekologickou imaginaci. Velký prostor je přitom věnován jednomu z projevů antropocénu: klimatické krizi. Komplexnost a enormita globálního oteplování znemožňuje, abychom jej mohli vnímat přímo, namísto toho se nám zjevuje ve formě zdánlivě nesouvisejících znamení a hrubých dat získaných výpočetní technikou. Odpovídá tak Mortonově koncepci hyperobjektů, jež zapříčinily konec světa. Z obecnějšího představení nového geologického věku se proto práce přesune do roviny zájmu o antropocén jako kulturní a filozofický fenomén. Nastíní šíři současného anti-antropocentrického diskurzu, jenž je za účelem zestručnění nahlížen jako „obrat k nelidskému”, i nadále se však opírá primárně o koncepty Timothy Mortona. Posledním úsekem práce je ekokritická analýza trilogie Jižní Zóna Jeffa VanderMeera optikou Mortonovy temné ekologie jako součást širšího pojednání o potenciálu weird literatury literárně uchopit neuchopitelné.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to explore the ways in which the Anthropocene is being reflected in literature and the possibilities of literature to influence the reader's ecological imagination. A big part of the thesis is devoted to one of the manifestations of the Anthropocene: the climate crisis. The complexity and enormity of global warming make it impossible for us to perceive it directly; instead, it appears to us in the form of seemingly unrelated signs and raw data obtained by computer technology. It thus corresponds to Morton's concept of hyperobjects, which, as he says, caused the end of the world. Therefore, after a more general introduction of the new geological age, the thesis shifts its focus to the Anthropocene as a cultural and philosophical phenomenon. It outlines the breadth of contemporary anti-anthropocentric discourse, which is seen as a "turn to the inhuman", but continues to rely primarily on the concepts of Timothy Morton. The last section of the thesis is an ecocritical analysis of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach Trilogy. The analysis is done through the lens of Morton's Dark Ecology as part of a broader treatise on the potential of so-called weird fiction to grasp the elusive.
