The Fall of Jerusalem and the Formation of Early Christianity

Abstract:

Dizertační práce navazuje na projekt religionistické reinterpretace počátků křesťanství, vyhlášený Burtonem L. Mackem v roce 1995. Soustřeďuje se na ty křesťanské tradice, které explicitně reflektují pád Jeruzaléma a zničení Jeruzalémského chrámu a často sloužily jako stavebními kameny eschatologického výkladu vzniku křesťanství. Podrobněji se proto v úvodních pasážích věnuje genezi eschatologického paradigmatu v rámci teologie a jeho kritice v současném religionistickém diskurzu (kapitola 1). Jádrem práce je otázka centrality Jeruzaléma a její křesťanské reinterpretace po pádu Města a destrukci jeho svatyně v roce 70 n.l. Po náležitém rozboru hierarchických struktur Jeruzalémského chrámu a jejich lokativních či utopických implikací (kapitola 2) se práce věnuje traktování pádu Jeruzaléma v synoptické tradici, zvláště v její formativní markovské dimenzi (kapitola 3), a dále dvěma legendárním okruhům o křesťanských a židovských útěcích z obleženého Jeruzaléma (kapitola 4). V závěrečném výhledu se zamýšlí nad retrospektivním vlivem pádu Jeruzaléma na utváření pašijového příběhu a role Jeruzalémské církve v raně křesťanské mýtotvorbě.

Abstract:

The dissertation follows the project which has been proclaimed by Burton L. Mack in 1995 and focused on a new academic redescription of Christian origins. The thesis concentrates on Christian traditions which closely reflect the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Jerusalem temple and often provide a fundamental basis for the eschatological interpretation of earliest Christianity. Therefore the dissertation starts with a detailed analysis of eschatological paradigm, its role in the development of theology and its criticism in the academic study of religions (chapter 1). The core of the thesis consists in the problem of centrality of Jerusalem and its Christian transformations after the collapse of the City and the destruction of its sanctuary in 70 C.E. After the appropriate analysis of graded structures of the Jerusalem temple and their locative or utopian implications (chapter 2), the text deals with the treating of the fall of Jerusalem in the synoptic traditions, especially in its Markan formative stage (chapter 3), and with two legendary cycles about Christian and Jewish escapes from the besieged Jerusalem (chapter 4). At the conclusion, the fall o Jerusalem is reconsidered from the point of its retrospective influence on the passion story and the role of the Jerusalem church in early Christian mythmaking.
