A Linguistic Picture of Social Relations in English and in Russian: the Stereotype of the Mother and the Father

Abstract:

The following dissertation is aimed at investigating the linguistic stereotype of the mother and the father in English and Russian. The dissertation consists of five chapters: The aim of the first chapter is to present a brief outline of the processes that resulted in the birth of cognitive linguistics as such, with special attention paid to the interplay between human thinking and language. Starting from ancient times, the author will present the key concepts that had an impact on the linguistic views of how humans categorize things. Special attention will be paid to the Sapir-Whorf theory, which has polarized linguisits and resulted in the bifurcation between structuralists and cognitivists. The second chapter will pick-up where the first chapter left, i.e. at the moment when it became certain that human understanding is driven by generalized and simplified views on things, called stereotypes. The author will examine the topic starting from Walter Lippmann giving the study into stereotypes its momentum and will elaborate upon a selection of further studies and approaches, which carry importance for the present paper. The third chapter will be devoted entirely to the research aims, methods and limitations. The author will elaborate upon the role of the scholar in the study and will provide a detailed description of the corpora and procedures involved. The fourth chapter will bring about a detailed analysis of the linguistic stereotype of the father in English and in Russian. The fifth chapter will present an analogical study of the stereotype of the mother in English and in Russian. In this chapter the author will conduct an in-depth intra- and interlinguistic analysis of the stereotypes in question.

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce má za cíl zkoumat lingvistické stereotypy vztahující se k osobě matky a otce v anglickém a ruském jazyce. Disertace se skládá z pěti částí: Úkolem první kapitoly je v kostce představit procesy, jejichž výsledkem byl zrod kognitivní lingvistiky jako takové, a zároveň zdůraznit vzájemný vliv lidského myšlení a jazyka. Počínaje starověkem, autor představí klíčové koncepty, jež ovlivnily lingvistické názory na lidskou schopnost třídit věci do kategorií. Zvláště se zaměří na Sapirovu-Whorfovu teorii, která vyvolala velmi různorodé názory a vedla k rozvětvení na strukturalisty a kognitivisty. Druhá kapitola naváže tam, kde předešlá kapitola skončila, to jest v okamžiku, kdy bylo jisté, že lidské chápání je řízeno zobecněnými a zjednodušenými názory na věci - takzvanými stereotypy. Autor bude zkoumat toto téma počínaje Walterem Lippmanem, který dal impulz ke studiu stereotypů, a dále jej rozvede na výběru dalších studií a přístupů, které nesou význam v rámci této práce. Třetí kapitola bude věnována výhradně výzkumným cílům, metodám a omezením. Autor se pozastaví nad tím, jakou roli hraje badatel v rámci studie, a poskytne detailní popis korpusu a použitých postupů. Čtvrtá kapitola přinese podrobnou analýzu lingvistického stereotypu otce v anglickém a ruském jazyce. Pátá kapitola obsáhne analogickou studii stereotypu matky v anglickém a ruském jazyce. V této kapitole autor rovněž provede důkladnou intra- a extralingvistickou analýzu daných stereotypů.
