The use of green roofs and walls on buildings

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá využitím zelených střech a stěn na tzv. zelených budovách. Cílem práce je stručné popsání historie zelených budov, charakteristika jejich benefitů, popsání možného technického řešení a typů. Dále stručné zhodnocení využívaných substrátů a vegetace pro zelené střechy i stěny, jejich závlaha a případné využití na čištění šedých vod. Na konci práce jsou uvedeny příklady těchto budov v České republice a ve světě. Mimo stručných popisů je hlavním cílem kritické zhodnocení jejich benefitů a porovnání výsledků dle různých studií. Jsou popsány výhody a nevýhody různých typů střech a stěn, využitého substrátu a vegetace a možnost závlahy. Mimo jiné také je-jich charakteristika, požadované vlastnosti a kritéria, podle kterých se poté daná střecha či stěna navrhuje. Zelené budovy jsou nepochybně schopné alespoň částečně zmírnit tzv. městské tepelné ostrovy, mají schopnost izolovat budovu, či omezovat a opožďovat množství odtoku dešťové vody ze střechy při velkém množství nárazových srážek. Jejich vliv je také zaznamenáván v případě čištění vody či ovzduší. Nepochybný pozitivní vliv mají i na lidskou mysl a pohodu. Přínosem práce je objektivní zhodnocení různých studií a jejich výsledků, jelikož se i přes jejich relativně dlouhou historii stále objevují nové poznatky a modifikace. V práci je popsán i požadovaný směr budoucího výzkumu, který je nutný k upřesnění jejich vlivu a schopností.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the use of green roofs and walls on so-called green buildings. The aim of the thesis is to briefly describe the history of green buildings, characterize their benefits, describe possible technical solutions and types. Further-more, a brief evaluation of the substrates and vegetation used for green roofs and walls, their irrigation and possible use for grey water treatment. At the end of the the-sis, examples of such buildings in the Czech Republic and worldwide are given. Apart from brief descriptions, the main goal is to critically evaluate their benefits and compare the results according to various studies. The advantages and disadvantages of different types of roofs and walls, the used substrate and vegetation and the possi-bilities of irrigation are described. Among other things, their characteristics, the required properties and the criteria according to which the roof or wall is then desig-ned are also presented. Green buildings are undoubtedly capable of at least partially mitigating the urban heat islands. They have the ability to insulate the building, or to limit and delay the amount of rainwater runoff from the roof during large amounts of heavy rainfall. Their influence is also noted in the case of water and air purification. They also have an undoubted positive effect on the human mind and well-being. The contribution of the paper is an objective evaluation of the various studies and their results, as new findings and modifications are still emerging despite their relati-vely long history. The thesis also describes the desired direction of future research that is necessary to clarify their impact and capabilities.
