Hot hand phenomenon in MMA

Abstract:

V této práci zkoumám fenomén „Hot hand“ ve sportu MMA, jinými slovy zkoumám vliv série výher na pravděpodobnost výhry dalšího zápasu. V práci využívám model logistické regresní funkce (logit binary), pomocí které analyzuji vliv série výher v UFC zápasech v období od roku 2010 do roku 2021. Lidé i hráči vnímají sérii úspěšných pokusů jako signál o zvýšené aktuální výkonnosti hráče. Mé zkoumání se snaží zodpovědět otázku, zda série výher může pozitivně ovlivnit pravděpodobnost zápasníka na výhru další. Existence hot hand efektu není v dřívějších článcích zkoumajících tento jev přesvědčivě prokázána. Některá literatura jej zamítá, jiná potvrzuje a některá ho potvrzuje jen za určitých podmínek. Analýzou hot hand efektu jsem v práci došel k závěru, že série aktuálních výher má statisticky signifikantní pozitivní vliv na pravděpodobnost výhry následujícího zápasu.

Abstract:

In this work, I examine the phenomenon of "hot hand" in the sport of MMA, in other words, I examine the effect of a series of wins on the probability of winning another match. In my work, I use the model of logistic regression function (logit binary), which I use to analyze the impact of a series of wins in UFC matches in the period from 2010 to 2021. People and players perceive a series of successful attempts as a signal of increased current player performance. My research seeks to answer the question of whether a series of wins can positively affect a fighter's probability of winning another match. The existence of a hot hand effect has not been convincingly investigated in previous articles. Some literature rejects it, others confirm it and some confirm it only under certain conditions. By analyzing the hot hand effect, I came to the conclusion that a series of wins has a statistically significant positive effect on the probability of winning the next match.
