Abstract:

Jane Austenová se proslavila mimo jiné popularizací vypravěčské techniky volného nepřímého projevu, čímž výrazně přispěla k upuštění od tradiční formy románu v dopisech. Právě dopisy však tvoří nedílnou součást jejích děl. Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá role, které dopisy v dílech Jane Austenové plní. První část této práce diskutuje využití dopisů jakožto stylistického prostředku, a to zejména z hlediska funkcí, které začleněné dopisy nesou. Druhá část této práce poté nabízí typologii dopisů, které se v románech Jane Austenové vyskytují.

Abstract:

Jane Austen is famed for the popularization, if not the introduction, of the free indirect discourse as a narrative technique, thereby making a significant contribution to the shift away from the traditional epistolary novels. Nevertheless, letters still constitute and important element of her works, fulfilling a variety of artistic purposes. This thesis explores the roles that letters play in Austen’s novels. The opening part of the thesis discusses Austen’s use of letters as a stylistic device, concentrating primarily on the functions that the incorporated letters take on. The second section then offers a typology of the letters that occur in Austen’s novels.
