Nesting strategy of Grey Partridge (Perdix perdix): nest site choice and nesting success

Abstract:

Rozličné hnízdní strategie umožňují ptákům efektivní využití daného prostředí pro zvýšení úspěšnosti vyvedení snůšek. Zemědělská krajina zaznamenala v průběhu dvacátého století bezesporu jednu z největších změn v podobě intenzifikace hospodaření. Na základě těchto změn došlo k výraznému poklesu početností polních ptáků. Je tedy nasnadě se ptát, zda živočichové se svými strategiemi dokáží reagovat na změny v hospodaření a úspěšně se s nimi vypořádat. Jako vhodný model byla vybrána koroptev polní, která zaznamenala jeden z největších poklesů početnosti. Práce se zabývá vybranými hnízdními strategiemi koroptve polní. Zkoumá vliv zakrývání vajec během různých fází hnízdního cyklu na přežívání snůšek a zároveň, zda výběr hnízdního biotopu v moderní zemědělské krajině ovlivňuje úspěšnost vyvedení snůšky. Terénní data byla sebrána během telemetrického sledování tří populací koroptví na území České republiky z let 2001-2004 a 2009-2010. Pro lepší pochopení vlivu ne/zakrývání vajec byl navíc uskutečněn terénní experiment s umělými hnízdy. Mezi čtyřmi definovanými fázemi hnízdního cyklu (počáteční fáze snášení s jedním vejcem, raná fáze snášení se dvěma až třemi vejci, pozdní fáze snášení zbylých vajec a inkubace) byl nalezen signifikantní rozdíl ve změně zakrývání snůšky. Koroptev polní ponechává první vejce ze snůšky nezakryté, následně zakrývá vejce po zbývající dobu snášení a nakonec během inkubace opět ponechává vejce nezakrytá po dobu své nepřítomnosti na hnízdě. Efekt samice na rozhodování o zakrývání vajec nebyl významný. Následně byl diskutován vliv zakrývání na přežívání snůšek, kdy ponechání prvního vejce nezakrytého se jeví jako vhodná antipredační strategie pro predikci predačního rizika vybraného hnízdního stanoviště. Následoval terénní experiment s umělými hnízdy. V něm byla na jednom hnízdním stanovišti umístěna dvě hnízda reprezentující exponované jedno vejce a zakrytou snůšku a následně byla vyhodnocena predikce jejich osudu po dvou dnech na osud snůšky po 28 dnech expozice. Experiment potvrdil význam zakrývání vajec pro lepší přežívání snůšky. Výsledky experimentu též potvrzují předpoklad testování hnízdního stanoviště pomocí prvního odkrytého vejce. Na místech, kde došlo k predaci nezakrytého vejce během prvních dvou dnů, byla denní míra predace zakrytých snůšek po 28 dnech více než 8x vyšší než na stanovištích bez predace. Z telemetricky sebraných dat o výskytu koroptví v předhnízdním (doba od utvoření páru do snesení prvního vejce) a v hnízdním období (doba od snesení prvního vejce do konce snůšky – vyvedení mláďat, predace nebo opustění hnízda) jsem kompoziční analýzou zjistil preference pro neobhospodařovávané biotopy, jako jsou ruderály, meze a remízy. Naopak lidským sídlům a lesům se koroptve stranily. Stejně tak koroptve přednostně umisťovaly hnízda do preferovaných nebo jiných neobhospodařovaných biotopu a vyhýbaly se dominantnímu biotopu (obilí na všech lokalitách). Signifikantní vliv na umístění hnízda měla studijní lokalita, zastoupení preferovaného biotopu v předhnízdním domovském okrsku a diverzita biotopů (Simpsonův index diverzity). Koroptve častěji umisťovaly hnízda do neobhospodařovaných biotopů s vyšším zastoupením preferovaného biotopu a vyšší biotopovou diverzitou. Naproti tomu byla úspěšnost hnízda ovlivněna umístěním v obilí, kdy hnízda v obilí byla predována méně než v jakémkoliv jiném biotopu. Abstract:

Different breeding strategies allow birds to make effective use of the environment to increase nest success. The agricultural landscape undoubtedly experienced one of the biggest changes in the form of intensification of farming during the twentieth century. As a result of these changes, there has been a significant decrease in the number of wild birds. It is therefore obvious to ask whether the birds with their strategies are able to respond to changes in agricultural management and successfully deal with them. The Grey Partridge was selected as a suitable model, which experienced one of the largest declines in abundance. The thesis deals with selected breeding strategies of Grey Partridge. It examines the influence of egg cover during different phases of the nesting cycle on the survival of clutches and at the same time whether the choice of nesting habitat in a modern agricultural landscape affects the nest success. The field data used in the thesis were collected during telemetric monitoring of three populations of partridges in the Czech Republic from 2001-2004 and 2009-2010. In addition, a field experiment with artificial nests was performed to better understand the effect of not / covering the eggs. A significant difference in the change in egg covering was found between the four defined phases of the nesting cycle (initial laying phase with one egg, early laying phase with two to three eggs, later laying phase of the remaining eggs and incubation). The partridges leave the first egg from the clutch uncovered, then covered the eggs for the remaining two stages of laying and finally leaved the eggs uncovered during incubation breaks. The effect of the female on the decision to cover the eggs was not significant. Subsequently, the effect of egg covering on nest survival was discussed; the leaving the first egg uncovered appears to be a suitable antipredation strategy for predicting the predation risk of selected nesting sites. A subsequent field experiment with artificial nests was designed. Two nests representing one exposed egg and a covered clutch were placed at one nest site and the predictors of their fate after two days and 28 days were evaluated. I confirmed the importance of egg cover for better clutch survival. The results of the experiment also confirm the hypothesis of testing the nest site with the first uncovered egg. In nest sites where uncovered egg predation occurred during the first two days, the daily predation rate of covered clutches after 28 days was more than 8 times higher than in sites without predation on uncovered eggs. From telemetry data on the occurrence of partridges in the pre-nesting (time from pair formation to the laying of the first egg) and nesting periods (time from laying of the first egg to the end of laying - hatching, predation or leaving the nest), compositional analysis revealed a preference for uncultivated habitats such as ruderals, field margins and game refuges. On the contrary, partridges avoided infrastructure and forests. Similarly, partridges preferentially placed the nests in preferred habitats or other uncultivated habitats and avoided the dominant habitat (cereal in all localities). The study site, proportion of the preferred habitat in the pre-nesting home range and habitat diversity (Simpson's diversity index) have a significant effect on nest location. Partridges more often placed nests in uncultivated habitats with a higher proportion of preferred habitat and higher diversity. In contrast, nest success was affected by the location in the cereal. Nests located in the cereal suffered from a lower daily nest failure than in any other habitat. The thesis describes important aspects of partridge breeding and their importance for successful hatching, which play a key role in survival of local populations. The findings may help to improve the abundance of partridges at least at the local level.
