The effect of aggressive behaviour on the dynamics of the house mouse hybrid zone

Abstract:

In house mouse living in a demic structure, male reproductive success depends on their social status determined by male-male contests. Aggression is important in forming of structure and dynamics in mice social units. Different aggression levels might play an important role in assymetric gene flow not only between partially isolated demes and populations, but also among subspecies. Two house mouse subspecies, Mus musculus domesticus and M. m. musculus living in Europe formed secondary hybrid zone in the place of their contact. This zone runs from Scandinavia to the Black Sea across the Europe. The aggression is strongly shifted to M. m. domesticus side. Presence of mouse hybrid zone in west of the Czech Republic gives us many possibilities to search mechanisms leading to evolution of new species - speciation. First point of our interest was to find and fix the position of mouse hybrid zone by catching mice and subsequently by using molecular markers. Atypical introgression of Y chromosome was founded accross the Czech-Bavarian transect. One of thoughts was, that the aggressive behaviour could be responsible in this situation. To find correlates responsible in reproductive barriers, we derived several inbred domesticus and musculus strains with pure subspecific genetic and phenotypic background from wild populations from the edges of hybrid zone. We confirmed different levels of aggression between these strains in congruence with ancestral populations. After this findings we had to determine the origin of aggression. We excluded influence of maternal effect and the genetic backround was clear. By using consomic strains with substituted Y chromosomes, originated from wild-derived strains we reported, the Y chromosome has no effect on fighting ability in males. Aggression seems to be coded by autosomes and/or X chromosome. Interaction between musculus Y chromosome and aggression in hybrid zone is debatable.

Abstract:

U myši domovej ako sociálne žijúceho živočícha je reprodukčný úspech samcov daný ich postavením v hierarchickom spoločenstve, deme. Toto postavenie je určené na základe výsledkov agresívnych interakcií. Agresivita sa javí ako adaptívny znak, dôležitý z hľadiska formovania štruktúry a dynamiky myších spoločenstiev. Rozdiely v agresivite sa môžu podieľať na asymetrickom toku génov medzi čiastočne izolovanými demami, populáciami ale aj poddruhmi. V Európe sa vyskytujú dva poddruhy myši domovej Mus musculus domesticus a M. m. musculus. Oba tieto poddruhy sa líšia v úrovni agresívneho prejavu, pričom Mus musculus domesticus je výrazne agresívnejší.V mieste ich kontaktu vznikla sekundárna hybridná zóna, ktorá sa tiahne od Škandinávie až k Čiernemu Moru. Poskytuje nám jedinečnú možnosť nahliadnuť do procesu vzniku nových druhov-speciácie. Odchytom myší a pomocou molekulárnych markrov sme sa pokúsili čo najpresnejšie lokalizovať priebeh hybridnej zóny. Už počas staršieho výskumu bol objavený atypický prechod muskuloidného Y chromozómu v Česko – Bavorskom transekte. Vytvorením inbredných kmeňov myší, odvodených z pôvodných populácií z okraja hybridnej zóny, so zachovaným poddruhovo čistým genotypom aj fenotypom sme získali možnosť nahliadnuť do genetického pozadia agresivity divokých myší. Metódou adopcie mláďat medzi kmeňmi sme potvrdili, že rozdiely v agresivite medzi poddruhmi sú dané hlavne geneticky a je možné ich používať na hľadanie genetických korelát. Pomocou krížení medzi kmeňmi a vytvorením konzomických hybridov so substituovaným Y chromozómom sme zistili, že v genetickom pohľade na agresivitu hrajú hlavnú úlohu autozómy, prípadne chromozóm X. Vplyv Y chromozómu na agresivitu v hybridnej zóne je diskutabilný.
