The beginnings of monasticism (II. - IV. century)

Abstract:

Ve své bakalářské práci jsem zpracovávala téma počátků mnišství, se zaměřením na období II.-IV. století. Jako cíl jsem si stanovila odpověď na otázku: Proč křesťané odcházeli do pouště žít asketický život a co je k tomu vedlo? Analyzuji vývoj a základní pilíře monasticismu. Po úvodním vysvětlení specifických pojmů, včetně askeze, se věnuji nejprve počátkům východního mnišství. Zde popisuji pouštní askezi (eremitství), dále pak společný život v klášterech (cenobitství) a uvádím několik významných představitelů z oblasti Egypta, Sýrie, Jeruzaléma a dalších. S Východem jsou spjata i Apofthegmata ? výroky a příběhy pouštních otců, kde tito otcové dávají svým žákům (mnichům) odpovědi na otázky a vedou je správným směrem. V západním mnišství zmiňuji Hieronyma, Augustina z Hippo a Martina z Tours. Ke konci práce se zaměřuji na etapy mnišství, s tím spojený klášterní život mnichů a v závěru odpovídám na otázky položené v úvodu.

Abstract:

In this bachelor thesis, I deal with the inception of monasticism, with special respect to 2nd to 4th centuries. The principal goal of this study is to resolve the question, "What specific reasons led early Christians to decide for an ascetical life in the desert?" I analyze here the development and main principles of monasticism. After explanation of specific terms (incl. asceticism), I concentrate, at first, on the early period of eastern monasticism. In this part, I characterize ascetical life in the desert (eremitism), the principles of collective life in monasteries (cenobitism), as well as the main representatives of eastern monasticism from Egypt, Syria, Jerusalem and other regions. With eastern monasticism are connected Apophthegmata Patrum ? Sayings of the Desert Fathers, a collection of stories and descriptions of spiritual practices provided by Desert Fathers to their disciples (monks). In the part concerning western monasticism, I specifically discuss Hieronymus (St. Jerome), Augustine of Hippo and Martin of Tour. In the last part, I describe the phases of monasticism, and life in monasteries connected with those phases. In the conclusion, I summarize the information from the previous chapters, and answer the questions formulated in the introductory part.
