Regime shift detection in precipitation and possible causes

Abstract:

V souvislosti s probíhající změnou klimatu by mělo v Evropě podle modelových simulací dojít kromě růstu teploty také ke změně v rozložení srážek během roku. Změna v rozložení srážek během roku může mít dopad na přírodu i společnost a může vést až k extrémům jako jsou povodně či sucho. Cílem této práce bylo odhalit, zda se v záznamech ze srážkoměrných řad v Evropě za období 1961—2020 ukazují tendence ke změně v režimu srážek. K hledání změn v režimu srážek byly využity dva indexy – Precipitation Concentration Index (PCI) a Giniho index (GINI). Bylo potvrzeno, že srážky v Evropě během roku mění svůj režim. Výsledky dlouhodobých trendů výše zmíněných indexů poukazují na převládající pokles nerovnoměrnosti srážek v severní Evropě na Skandinávském poloostrově, naopak střední a jižní Evropa má patrné tendence k nárůstu nerovnoměrnosti srážek. Z jednotlivých sezón je to zejména jaro, kdy je nárůst nerovnoměrnosti srážek ve střední Evropě dominantně významný a současně v souvislosti se zjištěným ubývajícím trendem celkových úhrnů srážek to může znamenat výrazné konsekvence pro přírodu i společnost.

Abstract:

In connection with the ongoing climate change, according to model simulations, in addition to rising temperatures, there should also be a change in the distribution of precipitation during the year in Europe. A change in the distribution of precipitation during the year can have an impact on nature and society and can lead to extremes such as floods or droughts. The aim of this work was to reveal whether the records from precipitation series in Europe for the period 1961-2020 show tendencies to change in the precipitation regime. Two indices were used to search for changes in the precipitation regime – the Precipitation Concentration Index (PCI) and the Gini Index (GINI). It has been confirmed that rainfall in Europe changes its regime during the year. The results of the long-term trends of the above-mentioned indices point to the prevailing decrease in precipitation unevenness in northern Europe on the Scandinavian Peninsula, while Central and Southern Europe tend to increase precipitation unevenness. Of the individual seasons, it is especially spring, when the increase in precipitation unevenness in Central Europe is dominantly significant and at the same time, in connection with the declining trend of total precipitation, this may have significant consequences for nature and society.
