The Ring, the Crown, the Halo: Reflection of the Marriages of Holy Princesses in Selected Legends from the 12th - 14th Centuries

Abstract:

Tématem práce jsou rozbory legend o pěti svatých panovnicích se zvláštním zaměřením na reflexe jejich manželství. Postavení žen bylo ve středověku podobně jako manželství chápáno skrze stereotypy pocházející z konce starověku. Určující roli při jejich formaci držela církev, od níž pocházely také představy o svatosti. Společenské proměny zejm. 13. století mohly najít svůj odraz právě v představě o svaté ženě, potažmo manželce a královně. Práce si klade za cíl nastínit možné důvody, proč konkrétní autoři žijící mezi 12. a 14. stoletím popisovali manželství evropských a byzantských světic daným způsobem.

Abstract:

The bachelor’s thesis analyses five legends of saint female rulers, focusing primarily on the description of their marriages. Woman’s position in society and understanding of marriage in Middle Ages were influenced by many specific stereotypes coming from the Ancient times. Catholic Church played an important role in their forming, as well as it did in case of sanctity. The social changes during the 13th century could have helped create a new concep-tion of a saint woman, who at the same time was a wife and a ruler. This work also suggests possible reasons for the writers of the legends to describe marriages of European and Byzantine saints in specific way.
