Media representation of the Islamic State in Mladá fronta Dnes

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá mediální reprezentací tzv. Islámského státu v deníku Mladá fronta Dnes. Cílem práce je popsat, analyzovat a interpretovat strategii konstruování mediálního obrazu Islámského státu, událostí, aktérů a vztahů s tematikou souvisejících. K dosažení cíle práce a získání odpovědí na výzkumné otázky byla zvolena metoda kritické diskurzivní analýzy v pojetí Normana Fairclougha, jež umožní studovat diskurz zvoleného deníku v souvislostech, v jakých je formován. Úvodní část práce se zabývá teoretickými východisky, z nichž výzkum vychází, tedy především teorii sociálně a mediálně konstruované reality. V další části bylo téma zasazeno do společensko-historického a výzkumného kontextu. Analytická část pak v korespondenci s popsanou metodologií zkoumá vybrané texty. Na základě analýzy lze konstatovat, že reprezentace Islámského státu v deníku Mladá fronta Dnes se mění v závislosti na konkrétních událostech, s nimiž je tento celek spojovaný, a texty v rámci tematiky reprodukují výrazně prozápadní diskurz.

Abstract:

The submitted diploma thesis deals with the media representation of the so-called Islamic State in daily Mladá fronta Dnes. Our aim is to describe, analyse and interpret a strategy of construction the media image of the Islamic State and thematically close events, participants and relationships. To accomplish our aim we have chosen the method of Norman Farclough’s critical discourse analyses which enable to study discourse of selected daily in the context in which it is formed. The introductory part of diploma thesis deals with theoretical starting points of research, especially theory of socially and media-constructed reality. In the next part of diploma thesis the theme was set into socio-historical and research context. The analytical part is based on study of chosen texts. According to the analyses it can be stated that representation of Islamic State vary depending on particular events in Mladá fronta Dnes, which Islamic State is associated with. Texts in the context of themes reproduce strongly pro-Western discourse.
