Warring Gods: Selected Conflicts of Religious and Power Groups in Japanese History

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je představení vybraných konfliktů odehrávajících se v průběhu japonských dějin a posouzení, zdali tyto spory můžeme označit za náboženské. Na začátku práce definuji termíny, se kterými nakládám – náboženství, konflikt a náboženský konflikt. V případě posledního zmíněného termínu jsem zvolil teorii Wendy Mayerové, Meredith McGuirové a materialistickou teorii náboženského konfliktu. Pro posouzení podstaty sporu jsem si vybral tři konflikty. Prvním z nich je spor mezi rody Soga, Mononobe a Nakatomi z období Asuka. Druhým sporem je vypálení chrámu Enrjakudži v období Azuči-Momojama. Posledním sporem je pronásledování křesťanů a křesťanských misionářů v období Edo. U každého sporu představuji jednotlivé strany konfliktu, příčinu propuknutí sporu a jeho průběh. Dále stručně zmiňuji důsledky jednotlivých sporů. V závěru každé kapitoly konfliktu provádím shrnutí informací, které aplikuji na teorii Mayerové, McGuirové a na materialistickou perspektivu pro posouzení podstaty konfliktu.

Abstract:

The topic of this thesis is an introduction of selected conflicts that have taken place in Japanese history and an assessment whether we can label these disputes as religious ones. At the beginning of the thesis I define the terms I use throughout the text – terms such as religion, conflict and religious conflict. For a definition of religious conflict, I chose the theory of Wendy Mayer, as well as that of Meredith McGuire and a materialist perspective of religious conflict. For analysis, I chose three specific conflicts within the Japanese history. The first one is a dispute between the Soga, Mononobe, and Nakatomi clans of Asuka period. The second one is the burning of the Enryakuji Temple in Azuchi-Momoyama period by Oda Nobunaga. The last conflict described in this thesis is the persecution of Christians and Christian missionaries in Edo period. For each dispute, I introduce all sides of the conflict, causes of the conflict and its process. I also briefly mention the consequences of individual disputes. At the end of each chapter of the conflict I summarize the information and apply Mayer's, McGuire's theory and materialist perspective for the assessment of the substance of the conflict.
