The panels of the Altar of Rokycan in the context of Middle-European painting

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce jsou desky tzv. Rokycanského oltáře. V prví kapitole se věnuji historii kostela Panny Marie Sněžné v Rokycanech, kde byl oltář původně umístěn, a dějinám kláštera augustiniánů kanovníků, který při tomto kostele vznikl. Ve druhé kapitole jsem provedla kritické zhodnocení dosavadní literatury zabývající se tímto tématem. Poslední a nejobsáhlejší kapitola se postupně zabývá všemi čtyřmi deskami, které v minulosti historici umění pokládali za součást jednoho oltáře (oboustranná deska Klanění tří králů a Nesení kříže (majitel Národní muzeum), deska Oplakávání Krista (Plzeňské biskupství) deska Poslední večeře (Muzeum Dr. Bohuslava Horáka v Rokycanech) a deska Navštívení Panny Marie (Strahovský klášter). Na základě důkladné formální i ikonografické analýzy, komparace desek, prostudování restaurátorských zpráv a pramenů a zmapování pohybu desek jsem dospěla k názoru, že oltář lze datovat do poloviny 90. let 15. století, že jej vytvořili domácí umělci školení v Norimberku a že součástí původního oltáře nebyla deska s Poslední večeří. Nakonec jsem desky zasadila do kontextu české a středoevropské pozdně gotické malby.

Abstract:

The theme of the thesis is preserve four panels of the so – called Altar of Rokycany. The first chapter deals with history of the Church of the Virgin Mary of the Snow and with the history of the monastery of Augustinian Canons in Rokycany. In the following chapter I review up to now literature related to the panels of Rokycany. The main part of the thesis is concerned with very four panels of Rokycany, two – sided panel The Adoration of the Magi – The Bearing of the Cross (it belongs to National Museum), one – sided panel The Bewailing of Christ (Episcopacy in Plzeň), one – sided panel The Visitation of the Virgin Mary (Strahov monastery) and one – sided panel The Last Supper (Museum of Bohuslav Horák in Rokycany). On the basis of the complete formal and iconographic analyse, the collation of the panels, the studying of the reports of restorers and the documentary sources I came to conclusions that the altar possible originated in the middle of the nineties of the fifteenth century that it was made by native artists trained in Nuremberg and that the Last Supper was not originally part of the same altar. Lastly I collated the pictures with the late Gothic Bohemian and Middle-European panel painting.
