Acceptance of psychological misconceptions: Relation with thinking styles and perceived expertise of psychology discipline

Abstract:

Psychologie je podobně jako mnohé jiné vědní obory zatížena miskoncepcemi, tedy přesvědčeními, pro něž neexistuje dostatečná empirická podpora. Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat vztahy mezi přijímáním psychologických miskoncepcí, styly myšlení a vnímanou odborností oboru psychologie. Konkrétně bylo zjišťováno, do jaké míry je přijímání miskoncepcí predikováno užíváním intuitivního a racionálního stylu myšlení a tím, jak je psychologie, z hlediska odbornosti, jako disciplína vnímána. Dále bylo zjišťováno, zda vstupuje vnímaná odbornost psychologie do vztahu přijímání miskoncepcí a stylů myšlení. Vedlejším cílem práce bylo zmapovat výskyt miskoncepcí v českém prostředí a také to, jak je obor psychologie společností vnímán. Za účelem získání dat byl využit online dotazník. Výsledný vzorek sestával z 260 respondentů (z toho bylo 68 % žen), a to ve věku od 18 do 80 let. Výsledky naznačují, že vyšší míra intuitivního stylu myšlení souvisí s vyšším přijímáním psychologických miskoncepcí. Naopak vyšší míra racionálního stylu myš-lení a vyšší vnímaná odbornost psychologie souvisí s jejich nižším při-jímáním. Moderační efekt vnímané odbornosti na vztah stylů myšlení a přijímání miskoncepcí nebyl nalezen. Výsledky dále implikují, že obor psychologie byl respondenty vnímán jako poměrně odborný. Výskyt miskoncepcí je v práci také diskutován.

Abstract:

Like many other scientific disciplines, psychology is encumbered by misconceptions, i.e., widely held beliefs not supported by established scientific evidence. The current thesis aimed to explore relations between acceptance of psychological misconceptions, thinking styles and perceived expertise of psychology discipline. Specifically, it was examined to which extent the acceptance of misconceptions is predicted by reliance on intuitive and rational thinking styles and perceived expertise of psychology. Furthermore, the effect of perceived expertise of psychology on the relation between acceptance of misconceptions and thinking styles was examined. The secondary aim of the current thesis was to explore how people perceive psychology in terms of its expertise and the prevalence of psychological misconceptions in the Czech environment. Data were obtained via online survey. The final sample consisted of 260 respondents (68% female) aged 18 to 80 years. The results indicate that a higher level of intuitive thinking is associated with a higher acceptance of psychological misconceptions. Furthermore, a higher level of rational thinking and higher perceived expertise of psychology predict lower acceptance of misconceptions. The moderation effect of perceived expertise of psychology on a relation between thinking styles and acceptance of misconceptions was not proved. The results also imply that psychology was perceived as a relatively expert field. The prevalence of misconceptions is also discussed.
