Regimes with hybrid or incomplete democracy

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce pojednává o režimech s hybridní či neúplnou demokracií a je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí. Zatímco první část se zabývá teoretickým výzkumem hybridních režimů, druhá část je věnována případové studii Nikaraguy. Cílem práce je objasnit pojem hybridní režim na základě studia konceptů několika autorů, kteří se jeho klasifikací zabývali. Dále je cílem práce aplikovat poznatky z teoretického výzkumu na případovou studii Nikaraguy. Pro studium hybridních režimů byli vybráni tito autoři: Gillermo O'Donnell, Fareed Zakaria, Wolfgang Merkel, Steven Levitsky a Lucan Way, Andreas Schedler a Larry Diamond. Hybridní režimy jsou takové režimy, které se nacházejí mezi liberální demokracií a autoritářským režimem. Tyto neúplné demokracie se objevily během třetí vlny demokratizace. Jednotliví autoři používají nejrůznější koncepty s cílem popsat a klasifikovat hybridní režimy. Závěrem teoretické části jsou analyzovány společné vlastnosti a rozdíly mezi všemi uvedenými koncepty hybridních režimů jednotlivých autorů. Druhá část práce je zaměřena na případovou studii Nikaraguy, která je považována za hybridní režim od konce 80. let, během 90. let a po roce 2006 za Daniela Ortegy. Situace v Nikaragui v těchto obdobích je následně srovnávána s koncepty hybridních režimů uvedených autorů.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis about regimes with hybrid or incomplete democracy is dividend into two main parts. While the first part concerns the theoretical research on hybrid regimes, the second part is dedicated to the case study of Nicaragua. The aim of the research is to clarify the term hybrid regime by studying the concepts developed by several scholars. Furthermore the aim of the bachelor thesis is to apply the findings from theoretical research on the case study of Nicaragua. The selected authors whose concepts of hybrid regimes were studied are Guillermo O´Donnell, Fareed Zakaria, Wolfgang Merkel, Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way, Andreas Schedler and Larry Diamond. Hybrid regimes are such regimes that are between liberal democracy and authoritarianism. These incomplete democracies appeared during the third wave of democratization as described by Samuel Huntington. The different authors used diverse concepts in order to describe and classify hybrid regimes. At the end of theoretical part the common characteristics and differences among all mentioned concepts are analyzed. The second part of the thesis focuses on case study of Nicaragua that is considered to be hybrid regime at the end of 80s, in 90s and after 2006 during Daniel Ortega presidency period. The situation in Nicaragua during these periods is compared to the concepts of the mentioned authors.
