King Vratislav and his reflection in contemporary sources

Abstract:

Je zřejmé, že diskuze o interpretaci osobnosti prvního českého krále Vratislava II. z rodu Přemyslovců (1061-1092) se dnes už nemůže odehrávat na poli chronologického a kontextuálního převyprávění roků jeho vlády, ale jen v důkladném rozboru jednotlivých pramenů jako celku. Hlavním cílem předkládané práce je systematická revize relevantních pramenů k vládě Vratislava II., zhodnocení jejich výpovědí, zmapování světů představ (Vorstellungswelt) daných kronik či letopisů a v neposlední řadě diskuze o sporných interpretacích, v nichž jsou mnohá svědectví k druhé polovině 11. století zakleta. Teprve v dalším sledu je příslušný pramen konfrontován s konkrétními poměry druhé poloviny 11. století. V tomto duchu je dílo rozčleněno do tří samostatných celků. V první části (Kosmův labyrint) je nejdříve zhodnocen Kosmův svět představ a celková koncepce vlády Vratislava II. Kosmova kronika nám zároveň vymezí místo a prostor, do kterého po důkladných rozborech budeme postupně vkládat naše další závěry. Druhý díl (Vyšehrad a jiné vzpomínky) je věnován písemnostem, které vznikly ve vyšehradské kapitule a v jiných duchovních institucích českých zemí. Ve třetím celku (Věhlas krále za hranicemi) jsou vyhodnoceny záznamy zahraničních skriptorií, zejména kláštera Pegau. Zvláštní prostor je rovněž věnován sbírce listů spojených s Vratislavem II., kterou v 18. století objevil v Řezně Bernhard Pez.

Abstract:

It is obvious that nowadays the discussion on interpretation of the personality of the first Bohemian king Vratislav II of the Přemyslid dynasty (1061-1092) cannot take place within the limits of chronological and contextual retelling the years of his reign but only on the basis of a thorough analysis of individual sources as a whole. The main objective of the presented paper is a systematic review of the relevant sources concerning the reign of Vratislav II, evaluation of their statements, familiarization with the conceptual worlds (Vorstellungswelt) of the given chronicles or annals and, last but not least, discussion on debatable interpretations which hide many reflections of the second half of the 11th century. Afterwards the relevant source is confronted with the particular situation in the second half of the 11th century. Following this approach, the paper is divided into three separate units. The first part (Cosmas’ Labyrinth) evaluates Cosmas’ world of ideas and the overall conception of the reign of Vratislav II. Cosmas’ chronicle specifies the time and place where we gradually put our findings resulting from thorough analyses. The second part (Vyšehrad and Other Memories) addresses the documents created in the Vyšehrad chapter and in other religious institutions of the Czech Lands. The third unit (King’s Fame Abroad) evaluates the records of foreign scriptoria, particularly the Pegau monastery. Special attention is also paid to the collection of letters related to Vratislav II that was found by Bernhard Pez in Regensburg in the 18th century.
