Analysis of Lean Software Development Transformation

Abstract:

V posledných rokoch sa metodiky ako Lean a Scrum ukázali efektívnejšie pri dodávaní projektov včas a v rámci daného rozpočtu v porovnaní s tradičnými plánovo riadenými metodikami. Zmena spôsobu práce vo väčšej spoločnosti však môže byť veľmi náročná, pretože si vyžaduje nadbytočné úsilie, čas a zdroje. Väčšina súčasných štúdií je zameraná hlavne na tento druh transformácie. V dnešnej dobe sa organizácie snažia ďalej optimalizovať Agilné metodológie, a jedným z týchto spôsobov je práve Lean software development, ktorý bol odvodený z pôvodnej Lean manufacturing metodiky. Táto práca analyzuje najmodernejšie techniky pri transformácii Agilného vývojového procesu na Lean software development. Poskytneme prehľad výhod, prekážok a metrík, s ktorými sa možno stretnúť pri úspešných transformáciách. Okrem toho vykonávame analýzu prípadovej štúdie o Leanovej transformácii vo veľkej softvérovej spoločnosti s využitím kvantitatívnych metrík. Analýza ukazuje zlepšenie v 3 zo 4 predom definovaných aspektoch, ktoré naznačujú, že praktiky Leanového vývoja softwaru môžu zlepšiť Agilné procesy. Aby sa však tento vplyv mohol generalizovať, je potrebé vypracovať viac takýchto analýz.

Abstract:

Over the last years, both Lean and Scrum approaches proved to be more effective for on-time and on-budget project delivery in comparison to the traditional plan-driven project management methodology. However, changing the way of working in a large-scale organization can be challenging as it takes effort, time and resources. Most of the current studies are focused mainly on this kind of transformation. Nowadays, organizations make effort to optimize Agile methodologies further, one way is the adoption of Lean software development principles which were adapted from the lean manufacturing movement from the early 1990’s. This thesis analyzes the current state of the art in the adoption of the Lean software development transformation in the context of an ongoing Agile development process. We examine benefits, challenges, and metrics that are used for successful transitions. Moreover, we conduct a case study analysis of the Lean transformation in a large software company with the use of quantitative metrics. These suggest improvement in 3 out of 4 defined aspects and thus implying that Lean software development practices can improve the capability of an ongoing Agile software process. However, the further research on this topic is needed to be able to generalize this impact to the other environments.
