Monazite, xenotime and zircon from pegmatites in Dolní Bory

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá studiem chemického složení a alteracemi monazitu, xenotimu a zirkonu z pegmatitů v Dolních Borech. V rámci práce byly pomocí EMPA studovány tyto minerály z různých žil (3, 4, 5, 8 a Oldřich) a různých minerálních asociací (okrajové zóny; v andalusitu; asociace s ilmenitem). Monazity, xenotimy a zirkony obsahují velká množství jindy minoritních prvků, z nichž byly podrobněji studovány aktinoidy. Monazit, jehož struktura preferuje největší kationy, je hlavním nositelem Th a aktinoidy do něj vstupují téměř výhradně pomocí cheralitové substituce. V xenotimech a zirkonech jsou koncentrace Th nízké. V xenotimu se uplatňuje cheralitová i coffinitová substituce a v zirkonu pouze coffinitová. V průběhu geochemické frakcionace žil (na základě poměru Zr/Hf v zirkonech) roste obsah U ve studovaných minerálech od granitické zóny po asociace s ilmenitem přibližně o 1 řád, zatímco množství Th zůstává podobné. Zároveň se také v normalizovaných REE křivkách v monazitech a xenotimech vyvíjí M-typový tetrádový efekt. Monazity a xenotimy bývají pouze výjimečně hydrotermálně alterované, zatímco všechny zirkony z asociace s ilmenitem podlehly částečné, nebo úplné rekrystalizaci procesem „dissolutionreprecipitation“. Schopnost prvků udržet se ve struktuře zirkonu při tomto procesu je řízena rozdílem jejich iontových poloměrů vůči zirkoniu a roste v tomto pořadí: U, Th, Y, REE <<< Sc < Hf. Jelikož je zirkon nejčastěji alterovaný a jeho struktura nedokáže při alteraci udržet U, jeví se ze všech studovaných minerálů jako nejméně vhodný pro jaderná úložiště. Na základě podobností ve vývoji chemického složení a textur monazitu, xenotimu a zirkonu se zdá, že všechny studované žíly vznikly během jednoho procesu ze stejného protolitu.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on study of chemical composition and alterations of monazite, xenotime and zircon from pegmatites in Dolní Bory (Czech Republic). During the work, minerals from different dykes (no. 3, 4, 5, 8 and Oldřich) and from different assemblages (granitic zone; in andalusite and assemblage with ilmenite) were studied by EMPA. Monazites, xenotimes and zircons contain high amounts of normally minor elements. Among them, actinides were investigated in detail. Monazite, whose structure prefers largest cations, is the main host of Th and actinides enter its structure almost exclusively via the cheralite type substitution. Thorium concentrations in zircon and xenotime are low. In xenotime, both cheralite and coffinite substitutions operate, whereas in zircon only coffinite substitution is present. During geochemical fractionation of the dykes (recorded in Zr/Hf ratio in zircons), concentration of U in all investigated minerals increases about one order of magnitude from granitic zone to assemblage with ilmenite, whereas amount of Th remains similar. M-type tetrad effect also develops in chondrite normalized REE curves of the monazites and xenotimes during the fractionation. Monazites and xenotimes are only seldom hydrothermaly altered. On the other hand, all zircons from the assemblage with ilmenite underwent partial, or complete recrystallization via the „dissolution-reprecipitation“ process. The ability of the elements to remain in zircon structure during recrystallization is controlled by differences of their ionic radii in comparism to zirconium and increases in the following order: U, Th, Y, REE <<< Sc < Hf. Because zircon is most frequently altered and its structure is unable to retain uranium during this process, it appears to be the least suitable for the nuclear waste repositories among the minerals investigated. Based on similarities in chemical composition and textures of the investigated minerals, it seems, that all studied dykes originated during one process from the same protolite.
