Elizabeth Richenza of Poland - the image of the Queen of Bohemia in the narrative sources and in historiography

Abstract:

Tématem této práce je rozbor obrazu Alžběty (Elišky) Rejčky v narativních pramenech středověku a v historiografii do 18. století. Cílem autorky je analyzovat zmínky vázané k osobě Alžběty v několika vybraných kronikách a také způsob, jak s těmito prameny nakládali pozdější dějepisci. Analýza mladší historiografie je dovedena až k dílu Františka Palackého. Teoretickou část práce představuje úvod ke všem analyzovaným pramenům a dále shrnutí poznatků o původu a životě Alžběty Rejčky zejména před jejím vstupem do veřejného života a tím i do povědomí dobových kronikářů. Praktická část je rozdělena do dvou větších celků. První z nich se věnuje obrazu královny v kronikách české, rakouské a polské provenience do konce středověku. Chronologicky seřazené rozbory jednotlivých děl jsou členěny podle období Rejččina života do čtyř podkapitol. Sledují její manželství s Václavem II. a Rudolfem Habsburským, poté její úlohu v čase do nástupu Jana Lucemburského a konečně její život jako movité a vlivné vdovy v Hradci Králové a v Brně. Druhý závěrečný celek se zabývá Alžbětiným obrazem v humanistické, barokní a osvícenské historiografii.

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis is an analysis of the image of Elizabeth Richenza in narrative sources of the Middle Ages and in historiography up to the 18th century. Author's goal is to analyse the references related to Elizabeth in a number of selected chronicles and the way these sources were treated by later historiographs. The analysis of the younger historiography is led to the work of František Palacký. The theoretical part of the thesis consists of an introduction to all of the analysed sources and of a summary of the knowledge about Elizabeth's background and life especially before her entry to the public life and into the awareness of contemporary chroniclers. The practical (applicative) part is divided into two bigger units. The first one is dedicated to the image of the queen in the chronicles of Czech, Austrian and Polish provenance until the end of the Middle Ages. Chronologically ordered analyses of individual works are divided into four subchapters according to the periods of Richenza's life. These follow her marriages to Wenzeslaus II and Rudolf of Habsburg, then her role in time until the accession of John of Luxembourg to the Czech throne, and finally her life as a wealthy and influential widow in Hradec Králové and Brno. The second and final part of this thesis deals with Elizabeth's image in the Humanist, Baroque and Enlightened historiography.
