Changes in the status of Maronite community in Lebanon

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je charakterizovat proměnu postavení maronitské komunity v Libanonu. Postavení maronitů se historii značně měnilo. Pomocí chronologizace jsou představeny významné historické události, které měly vliv na proměnu postavení maronitů. Toto postavení také ovlivňovaly vztahy s ostatními náboženskými skupinami v Libanonu. Práce sleduje tuto proměnu ve třech rovinách ? politické, demografické a ekonomické. První etapa existence maronitské církve se váže k obdobím, kdy Libanonu vládli muslimové, i přesto se maronité brzy stali početně nejsilnější složkou obyvatelstva. Postupně se maronité dokázali prosadit také na politické a ekonomické rovině. Vrcholným obdobím z hlediska postavení maronitů byla doba po první světové válce a po získání nezávislosti, kdy maronité zastávali nejvýznamnější politické funkce. Sedmdesátá léta však přinesla spory s muslimy i drúzy, které vyvrcholily v občanskou válku. Taifská dohoda, která tuto válku ukončila, přinesla přímý vliv Sýrie na Libanon, v důsledku čehož ztratili maronité svá politická i ekonomická místa. Po stažení syrských vojsk, se maronité postupně vracejí do politického i ekonomického dění v Libanonu.

Abstract:

The main aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe changes in the status of Maronite community in Lebanon. This status varied considerably throughout the history. Using chronologisation this thesis presents main historical events, which influenced the status of Maronites. This status was also affected by relations with other religious groups in Lebanon. This thesis is focusing on three levels of the term status ? political, demographic and economic. First phase of existence of Maronite community was also an age in which Lebanon was ruled by Muslim, despite that Maronites quickly became the most populous community. Maronites were able to gradually make a mark on political and economic level too. Peak period for status of Maronites were the years after First World War and after Lebanon gained independence, when Maronites held the most important political posts. But the seventies brought disputes with Muslims and Druzes, which culminated in civil war. The Taif Agreement, which ended the war, also brought direct influence of Syria on Lebanon and as a consequence of that, Maronites lost their political and economic places. After the withdrawal of Syrian troops Maronites are returning to the politics of Lebanon.
