Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) in the Lusatian mountains: observation of behaviour and the effect of tourism

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce pojednává ve své rešeršní části o biorytmech kamzíka horského (Rupicapra rupicapra), vlivu lidské disturbance na kopytníky se zaměřením na kamzíka a mezidruhových interakcích kamzíka s jinými kopytníky a především s jelenem evropským (Cervus elaphus). V rámci lidských disturbancí jsou uvedeny studie zaměřené nejen na disturbance způsobené rekreační činností, ale i létajícími objekty či vozidly. V kapitole pojednávající o mezidruhových interakcích jsou uvedeny doposud získané informace o kompetici kamzíka s jelenem na území Lužických hor, studie zabývající se touto problematikou v zahraničí a krátký popis tvorby smíšených skupin zvířat. Rešeršní část práce je zakončena kapitolou, v níž uvádím všechny interakce kamzíka s jeho okolím, které se nehodily do ostatních částí práce, ale stojí za zmínku. Ve vlastním výzkumu byla zpracována mnou získaná data z pozorování kamzíka v Lužických horách a CHKO Labské pískovce. Data byla pro kamzíka získávána metodou scan samplingu během přímých pozorování (49 pozorování, přibližně 245 hodin) po dobu tří let (v rozmezí let 2019-2021). Krom dat týkajících se kamzíků zde hodnotím i vliv turismu na zdejší populaci a možný vliv návratu vlka evropského (Canis lupus) na chování při její pastvě. Dále se také v rámci vlastního výzkumu zabývám společným výskytem kamzíka s dalšími druhy kopytníků na sledovaných pastvinách. Na základě výsledků této práce jsem prokázal, že kamzík horský v Lužických horách nebyl po dobu výzkumu více ostražitý v přítomnosti turistů, jeho výskyt nebyl negativně ovlivněn počtem turistů, počtem skupin turistů ani hlasitostí skupin turistů a před turisty téměř neutíkal. Dále jsem prokázal, že podíl hlídajících kamzíků ve skupině se během pozorování nezvyšoval a že jelen evropský, srnec obecný (capreolus capreolus) a kamzík horský preferovali samostatný výskyt na sledované louce v Lužických horách. Ve sledované oblasti v CHKO Labské pískovce však jelen s kamzíkem tvořili smíšené skupiny. Diskuze práce je věnovaná srovnání mých výsledků s výsledky zahraničních studií a zhodnocení přínosů a negativ výskytu kamzíka v oblasti Lužických hor a CHKO Labské pískovce. Dále také uvádím možné další užitečné směry, kterými by se výzkum zdejší populace mohl ubírat.

Abstract:

In its literary research part this thesis deals with the biorhythms of the northern chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), the influence of human disturbance on ungulates with a focus on chamois and interspecific interactions of chamois with other ungulates and especially with red deer (Cervus elaphus). Within the chapter focused on human disturbances, studies are presented focusing not only on disturbances caused by recreational activities, but also flying objects and vehicles. The chapter dealing with interspecific interactions contains information so far obtained about the competition of chamois and red deer in the Lusatian Mountains, studies dealing with this issue abroad and a brief description of the formation of mixed groups in animals. The literary research part of the work ends with a chapter in which I present all the interactions of the chamois with its surroundings, which did not fit into any other parts of the thesis, but were worth mentioning. In my own research, I process the data I obtained from the observation of chamois in the Lusatian Mountains and the Elbe Sandstone Protected Landscape Area. Data for chamois were obtained by scan sampling during observations (49 observations, roughly 245 hours) for a period of three years (between 2019 and 2021). In addition to data on chamois, I also evaluate the impact of tourism on the local population and the possible impact of the return of the grey wolf (Canis lupus) on its grazing behaviour. Furthermore, in my own research I deal with the common occurrence of chamois with other species of ungulates in the monitored pastures. Based on the results of this work, I proved that the chamois in Lusatian Mountains was not more vigilant in the presence of tourists, its occurrence was not negatively affected by the number of tourist, tourist groups or loudness of the tourist groups. Very few examples of chamois running away from tourist was recorded. I also showed that the proportion of vigilant chamois in the group did not increase during the study time and that the red deer, roe deer (capreolus capreolus) and chamois preffered a separate occurrence in the monitored area in the Lusatian Mountains. However, in the Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area red deer and chamois formed mixed groups. The discussion of this thesis is devoted to the comparison of my results with the results of foreign studies and the evaluation of the benefits and negatives of chamois in the Lusatian Mountains and the Elbe Sandstone Protected Landscape Area. Additionally I mention possible other directions that the research of the local population of chamois could take.
