Sustainability in culture: the role of cultural institutions and art in times of climate crisis

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je zmapování environmentální problematiky v kulturním sektoru se zaměřením na vybrané veřejné kulturní instituce a hledání odpovědí na otázky týkající se role kultury v komunikaci ekologických témat ve společnosti. Je popsán vývoj vnímání vztahu člověka k přírodě a edukativní potenciál umění ve vztahu k ochraně životního prostředí. Práce se zabývá výstavním a doprovodným programem vybraných galerií zaměřujícím se na ekologická témata. Další oblastí zájmu jsou výzvy udržitelného a odpovědného hospodaření v galerijním a muzejním provozu. Práce se taktéž věnuje uměleckým počinům reagujícím na dopady lidské činnosti na přírodní procesy a na rostoucí hrozbu klimatické krize. Pro účely práce byla vybrána kvalitativní výzkumná metoda založená především na rozboru polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s odborníky z praxe. Na základě získaných poznatků jsou sledovány aktuální tendence v této oblasti a navržena doporučení pro kulturní instituce.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to map the environmental issues in the cultural sector with a focus on selected public cultural institutions and find answers to questions about the role of culture in the communication of environmental issues in society. The development of the perception of man's relationship to nature and the educational potential of art in relation to environmental protection are described. The thesis deals with the exhibition and accompanying program focusing on ecological topics in the selected galleries. Another area of interest is the challenges of sustainable and responsible management of galleries and museums. The thesis also deals with artistic works responding to the impacts of human activity on natural processes and the growing threat of the climate crisis. For the purposes of this research, a qualitative research method was selected based primarily on the analysis of semi-structured interviews with experts from practice. Based on the acquired knowledge, current trends in this area are monitored and recommendations for cultural institutions are proposed.
