Diagnostics of Selected Cognitive Functions of University Students Attending a Stay in an Environment of Restricted Environmental Stimulation

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce pojednává o účincích metody chamber REST na vybrané kognitivní funkce. Cílem teoretické části je seznámit čtenáře s metodami omezené zevní stimulace, uvést hlavní charakteristiky vybraných kognitivních funkcí, a nakonec zmínit výsledky zahraničních výzkumů, které se touto oblastí již zabývaly. Cílem empirické části práce bylo prozkoumat, zda čtyřdenní pobyt v prostředí omezené zevní stimulace souvisí s výkonem participantů v baterii kognitivních testů, a ve kterých testech dochází ke zlepšení, resp. zhoršení jejich výkonu. Participanti byli testováni formou pretest-posttest před pobytem, několik hodin po ukončení pobytu a tři dny po ukončení pobytu. Výsledky prokázaly, že ačkoliv při druhém testování docházelo v některých testech k signifikantnímu zlepšení výkonu u obou skupin, statisticky významné rozdíly mezi skupinami se prokázaly pouze u testu Rey-Osterriethovy komplexní figury. V tomto testu dosahovala kontrolní skupina signifikantně vyšší míry zlepšení. Dle výsledků našeho výzkumu tedy můžeme říci, že se významný vliv metody chamber REST na kognitivní funkce neprokázal.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis discusses the effects of chamber REST method on selected cognitive functions. The aim of the theoretical part is to acquaint the reader with the methods of restricted environmental stimulation, introduce the main characteristics of selected cognitive functions, and finally mention the results of some research studies that were already dealing with this subject. The goal of the empirical part was to investigate if a four-day stay in chamber REST conditions has an impact on the performance of participants in a battery of cognitive tests, and ascertain in which tests the performance has increased or decreased. Participants were tested in the form of pretest-posttest before the stay, a few hours after the end of the stay and three days after the stay. The results showed that although at the second testing in some tests there was an occurrence of a significant performance improvement in both groups, statistically significant differences between groups were proved only in Rey-Osterrieth complex figure. In this test, the control group reached a significantly higher rate of improvement. According to our research results we can say that the significant influence of the chamber REST method on cognitive function was not proved.
