Semiotic implications of information in Scott Lash`s Critique of Information

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se soustředí na sémiotické aspekty informace a jejich implikace pro soudobé kritické vědění. I když v souladu s postojem převládajícím ve vědění informaci nelze chápat jako významovou jednotku, ve své Kritice Informace se její autor, Scott Lash, snaží prokázat, že redukování pojetí informace na její kvantitativní rozměr, v podstatě znemožňuje poznání a kritickou reflexi podstaty změn, které souvisí s nástupem a rozšiřováním nových komunikačních technologií, a které se ve vědění zvyklo označovat jako přechod k informační společnosti. S ohledem na ve vědění převládající popírání sémantické povahy informace, je úvodní část této práce věnována vymezení informace jako významové jednotky. V ústřední části práce se snažíme zachytit informaci v jejím přirozeném prostředí, které je utvářeno mediálními technologiemi a také se zabýváme identifikací a analýzou jednotlivých sémantických aspektů informace. V následujících kapitolách jsou předmětem našeho zájmu implikace Lashova pojetí informace pro stávající sémiotickou teorii a kritické myšlení obecně. Naší tezí je, že způsob, jímž Scott Lash pracuje s pojetím informace vážně problematizuje stávající sémiotické a kritické vědění, především ty koncepty a teorie, které vychází z logocentrické tradice a tradice tzv. jazykového obratu v humanitních vědách. Ve světle Lashova argumentu, spolu s nástupem nových forem dorozumívání jazyk přichází o svou relevanci, a v souvislosti s tím, nemůže nadále sehrávat funkci primárního modelu poznání.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to consider semiotic implications of information. Although according to prevailing approaches information is not understood as notion of meaning, Scott Lash in his Critique of Information claims that reducing information to its quantitative dimension leads to impossibility of recognition and critical reflection of changes which bear upon introduction and dissemination of new technologies of communication and following introduction of so called information society. The first part of the thesis is devoted to delimitation of information as notion of meaning. In the central part we are trying to render information in its natural environment that is in highly technological media-scape and to identify and analyse particular semiotic aspects of information. In following chapters we focus on implications of Lash`s concept of information for existing semiotic theory and critical thought in general. Our thesis is that the way in which Scott Lash works with concept of information puzzles existing semiotic and critical knowledge, especially these theories and concepts which comes from logocentric tradition or from the tradition of so called linguistic turn. According to Lash`s argument with introduction of new ways of communication, language loses its relevance and cannot be use as primary model of knowledge.
