Crossing the Boundaries: The Missing Role of the Trickster as the Messenger of Gods in Native American Mythology

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá mýtickou postavou takzvaného trickstera v rozmanitých kulturách. Práce se soustředí na trickstera jako na postavu, která překračuje různé typy hranic. V mnohých kulturách slouží tricksteři při překračování hranic jako poslové bohů, avšak v mýtech amerických Indiánů je role tricksterů jako poslů jakéhokoliv druhu jenom velmi okrajová. Účelem této práce je prozkoumat situace, kdy tricksteři v Indiánských mýtech překračují různé druhy hranic, s cílem zjistit, co mohlo způsobit, že funkce posla bohů chybí a jaké funkce zastávají namísto této. V první kapitole je vysvětleno, co za postavu trickster je a proč je tato postava v mytologiích důležitá. Druhá kapitola se zabývá důležitostí funkce trickstera jako posla bohů, která je demonstrovaná na příkladech z řecké a africké mytologie. V předposlední kapitole jsou představeni tricksteři amerických Indiánů, kteří jsou pak porovnáni s trickstery, kteří slouží jako poslové bohů. V poslední kapitole jsou pomocí syntézy tří mytologických cyklů a různých doplňujících zdrojů analyzovány konkrétní mýty, v nichž tricksteři překračují hranice různých typů se zaměřením na důvody, proč jsou hranice překročeny a funkce, které přitom trickster zastává. Tato práce poukazuje na to, že tricksteři v Indiánských mýtech, přesto že překračují hranice při různých příznivých příležitostech, neslouží jako poslové bohů. To je způsobeno rozdíly v dynamice vztahů mezi tricsktery a bohy. Indiánští tricksteři však při překračování hranic však často zastávají funkce bytostí, jež transformují kulturu a formují svět.

Abstract:

This Bachelor’s Diploma thesis focuses on the mythical figure of the trickster across mythologies of various cultures. The focus of the thesis is the phenomenon of tricksters as boundary-crossers. In many mythologies, while doing so, tricksters served as messengers to gods, however in Native American myths the role of tricksters as messengers of any kind is marginalized. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the Native American tricksters crossing various types boundaries to determine, what may have caused the absence of the trickster’s role as the messenger of gods and what kinds of roles are assumed. The first chapter defines what the trickster figure is and what functions does this figure have in myths. The second chapter focuses on the importance of the role of the trickster as a messenger to gods, which is demonstrated on examples from Greek and African mythology. In the penultimate chapter, Native American tricksters are introduced and compared with tricksters, who serve as messengers of gods. In the last chapter, concrete examples of the tricksters crossing the boundaries are analyzed based on the synthesis of three cycles of Native Ameican myths and a variety of secondary sources. The focus is on the purpose of the crossing and the roles the tricksters assume while doing so. This thesis shows that the Native American tricksters, despite crossing boundaries on numerous occasions do not take on the role of messenger of gods. This is caused by the differences in the dynamics in the relationships Native American tricksters have with the gods. Native American tricksters, while crossing the boundaries, very often assume the roles of a cultural transformers and world shapers.
