Forecasting performance of DSGE models with time-varying inflation targeting

Abstract:

Cílem práce je posoudit predikční výkonnost vybraných DSGE modelů se zohledněním v čase proměnného inflačního cíle. Pomocí literární rešerše jsou vybrány čtyři novokeynesiánské DSGE modely, které jsou rozděleny do dvou porovnávacích skupin. V rámci každé skupiny jsou modely porovnávány se svými protějšky, zahrnující dynamicky se vyvíjející inflační cílování. Modely jsou odhadovány na datech Evropské unie mezi roky 2001 až 2019. Pomocí bayesovských metod jsou získány odhady parametrů a konstruovány modelové predikce. V závěrečné části práce jsou diskutovány výsledky exploratorní analýzy dat, verifikace modelů a samotné predikční výkonnosti vybraných DSGE modelů. Analýza ukázala, že modely s časově proměnným mechanismem se jeví jako výkonnější modely v predikcích budoucího vývoje sledovaných ukazatelů úrokové míry a inflace.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to assess the forecasting performance of selected DSGE models with the time-varying inflation target. Based on s literature search, four New Keynesian DSGE models are selected and divided into two comparison groups. Within each group, the models are compared with their counterparts incorporating dynamically evolving inflation targeting. The models are estimated on European Union data between 2001 and 2019. Bayesian methods are used to obtain parameter estimates and construct model predictions. The final part of the paper discusses the results of the exploratory data analysis, model verification and the actual prediction performance of the selected DSGE models. The analysis shows that time-varying mechanism models appear to be more powerful models in predicting the future evolution of the observed interest rate and inflation indicators.
